Grr, my Missy has had a history of severe ear troubles before she came to me, and it looks like its flared up again. Not sure if you would call what she has now as an inner ear infection though ...

If you shine a light down her left ear, you can see the ear canal is blocked off by pus. I put her on amoxy since its the only med I have on hand - the vets have wonky hours during the holidays so I haven't been able to make an appointment yet. Since the amoxy, her ear is not smelling as horrible so the med must be doing some good. It doesn't seem strong enough to knock out the infection though. And it doesn't help that Missy keeps digging into her ear and making it bleed.

Next Tuesday would be the earliest I could make an appointment - is there anything else I can do for my girl until then? There's a 99% chance that the vet will prescribe baytril - would that do the trick?

I had the pus/bacteria from 2 inner ear infection rats cultured and baytril was one of the abs it was sensitive to.

I would advise OTC pain meds like infant ibu...because of the anti-inflammatory effect as well as pain relief.
Poor lovey, sounds like her inner ear infection came back with a vengeance.

Oh drat, I completely forgot that I had metacam stashed away somewhere. Gave her some of that tonight.

Hope the poor girl can cope with the infection til Tuesday - have a vet appointment first thing that morning.

Oh boy, this vet visit is going to put a huge dent in my pocket ...

Good news - vet thinks that she'll heal up just fine. Her tiltiness will probably be a bit more pronounced, but she should be back to her goofy self.

Bad news - haven't seen the bill yet since I'm picking her up after work, but I'm guessing it'll be close to $300. The vet is going to give her an injection to get things rolling (~$60) and is sending her home with three meds (~$20 each) - antibiotics, metacam, and ear drops. The visit itself is $90, plus I have to board her for the day thanks to my workplace.

Looks like I'll be putting off dental work for myself for yet another month. Gotta get that cavity filled in sometime soon though ... GAH!
