I woke up this morning to a very quiet cage. Got everyone up and moving with the meds, but Princesse would remain in the Circus - she usually is the most active, along with Hunter. When I brought breakfast, she still wouldn't come out, so I took the Circus out the cage to take her out of there... and found a very badly swollen Princesse :sad3:

Apparently, she got bit on her neck and it all got swollen - she looks like she's in some sort of shock: very quiet, tired... I estimated a metacam dose to give her quickly - an anyone help me with dosing her? My metacam is 1.5 mg and she weights 309 g. Now I've got all sorts of bad scenarios running in my mind - would this state of shock be normal? I am worried it will cause more damage... She ate the blueberry baby food they thrive for in the morning, but wouldn't touch the mush blocks I feed Cookie. I guess that's what's worrying me.

Here are pictures I took while she was having her meds

I will be calling the clinic as soon as they open their lines to see if they recommend to add abs to the mix - I do have an appointment for Cookie and Mira on Wednesday, should I add Princesse to the list? Or should I get her in today? My vet is off on Mondays and Tuesdays now :sad3:

I hated having to leave to work this morning... :cry4:

at 1 mg/kg I am getting .2 cc's for her.

I would advise abs just in case. It looks like she was bitten and the hole closed up asap and she bled under her skin. The body often reabsorbs these crazy swellings on their own. I have seen it twice like that now.

I'll try to find Asha's thread.

ETA: Asha's is smaller, but Selene's looked identical (no thread on here since it was before the Rat Shack's time and I cannot get into PB on this computer.

Thanks Shelagh! Feeling a bit better now. Trying to get hold of a line at the clinic... hopefully, they will give me dosages without an appointment... I wouldn't be worried if Dr Beaulieu was on duty today, but since she's not... we'll see.

Reading your thread on Asha, she sounds like Princesse in some ways. I believe Princesse was alpha in her past life and has a hard time being lower in rank in my crew. And Chester was in a bad mood last night - BF told me he saw him picking on her a few times. Suspicions are all on him, but I didn't see nor hear anything  Guess I'm a heavy sleeper... Princesse definitely is trying to work her way up in hierarchy, she was picking on Cabotine a lot last week... hopefully, she learned her lesson and will try to be less aggressive from now on...

Poor baby...

she looks like a hamster with her neck all swollen like that. I am so sorry about your little girl. I hope that she will be feeling better soon. I know what you mean about feeling awful about having to leave. I hope that her neck will feel better by the end of the day. ((Hugs))

Thank you ladies! I sure hope she will look and act more normal tonight!

And she does look like a hamster, doesn't she? :giggle: I believe the tought actually tried to make its way to my brain when I first saw her, but got brushed off by my worries...

I finally was able to get hold of the clinic. Guess what? They are juggling with sick vets today sooooo.... Dr Bealieu is in after all!!! :joy: What a relief! They will call me back with recommendations and dosages later. Even if they don't require an appointment for her, I think I'll sneak Princesse in on Wednesday, to keep Cookie company, so to speak!

Addition: While I was typing this, Dr Beaulieu called. I've got dosage for Metacam and Baytryl for 2 weeks... with a recommendation to check and call back if it turns into a harder mass (abcess). Can't wait to get home tonight and see how she does!

Good news!!

I found Selene's pics...poor lady got this while we were fighting her pyoderma.

Awful!!!! Poor baby! You've got the weirdest cases...

It is a small relief, but a relief all the same to know this is just "another" ratty thing. The size of the swelling really threw me off... never experienced it before! It was so scary finding her that way. I relived finding Chipie dead all over again ((shivers)).

Maybe when she's in on Wednesday you could get them to do a fine needle aspiration to make sure that it's a haemotoma and not an abscess. I hope she's feeling better with the meds!

I got home to a more awakened, more active sweet Princesse.

You can tell the mass is bugging her, but she is so much better than she was this morning! The swelling went down a bit, she walks around the cage, tried the mushed blocks and cleans herself. I took a few pictures at meds time, but never got a good angle. This is the best I got

And just because they look so well-behaved... group medicating! Princesse, Cabotine, Tanner and Cookie. And no... this is not a tumour on Cabotine... just fat :gaah:

I just saw this... poor Princesse!

I'm glad she seems to be doing well (overall) with your guys though. I have group medicating pictures like that too... they look so innocent until someone finishes their meds and tries to take their neighbour's.
