First of all, I apologize if this is already a topic. I also apologize if this seems a little scattered.

So, Elk was eating his tail just last week, and we tried to get him into a vet, but they weren't open. He ended up chewing half of his tail off and it was healing. Well, last night I noticed that he wasn't looking so good, he was just laying at the back of the cage, staring. I thought he was dead. This morning wasn't looking so good either, he was still laying on the bottom level, staring and barely moving. I had to clean their cage this morning, so I did that and he just sat on my lap the whole time, breathing rather heavily. Throughout the day he spiraled downhill, he barely moves now and when he does, he wiggles around.

He'll be four on October 28th.

I just don't know what to do anymore, all these things came on at once. I'm not sure if I should call the vet and schedule for an appointment for him to be put to sleep, or if he's going to make it until then. I'm not sure if he's in pain, he's just laying there on his side right now. I was holding him a few minutes ago and he bit me --he didn't draw blood, but he kind of just held on for two or three seconds. It breaks my heart to see this, to know that he might be suffering.

His brother is minding his own business, he checked Elk out a couple times but now he's just sleeping --it almost looks like he wants nothing to do with him. If Elk does go, Moose will be alone and I don't know what I'm going to do when that happens.

Does anyone have any experience with this? I'd really like some advice.

Is his breathing still bad?
It could be pneumonia if it's heavy. Is she warm, or not keeping his temperature very well? Have you managed to get food and drink to him?

Yeah, his breathing is slow and deep. And he feels pretty fine temperature wise, not any different than before. He's eating and drinking fine. I'm sure he would be fine if he was younger, but he's almost four and I guess that's why I'm so worried.

:hugs: Sounds exactly like what I went through recently with Token. One day he was fine, the next he was just....out of it. If it's any consolation, I truly believe that Token at least was totally unaware of what was going on around him, so our boys likely weren't in much pain.... :hugs:

Hope you can find a new friend for your remaining boy soon!

Your rattie baby made it to almost 3 and a half years. I think he just got tired. I'm sorry he has now passed.
