One of my little guys (4 months old) seems to have a wee bit of porphyrin about his nose pretty much all the time. I brought him and his brother home about a month ago, at which point both were stressed and excited and sneezy, but that subsided within a week. Both are now very healthy and active. It's just the one little guy seems to always have a bit of the red stuff dried around the outside of his nostrils everytime he wakes up. Once he's been out playing for a while, it goes away, but I assume that's because he's grooming it off. There is no sneezing or snuffling, and his breathing seems perfectly normal. They both had a wellness check by our vet about two weeks ago, and she said his lungs sound fine. He is the first rat I've had that's been white in the face, the rest have all had dark hoods, so I wondered if maybe my others have had the same thing but it's just more noticeable on his white fur. The bottom floor of their cage has a paper pulp bedding that I do a complete change of once a week, and he rarely ever hangs around down there anyway. They both pee on the upper shelves, but I wipe those down twice a day pretty thoroughly to avoid upper resp problems.

Is porphyrin buildup around the nose just something that some healthy rats just kind of have and aren't bothered by, or should I be worried?

Porphyrin is secreted when there's stress in the rat. That could be stress from illness or stress from other factors like too much noise, smoke, other pets getting too close to the cage, dusty bedding... it can be anything really, even food. Keep an eye on him, see if you can change a few things up, observe his routine. If he's otherwise healthy, wait it out a bit longer.

My first two girls had a lot of it in the Summer cuz it was too hot in my bedroom upstairs. Luckily my pleas got us an AC and it cleared up...

Little amounts of porph first when they wake up is normal, but keep a watch on for breathing.

I don't know about you (or rats!) but I always have to blow my nose first thing when I wake up because mucous has built up over the night... rats probably have the same problem. I have a PEW and she is always porphy after a nap. I've never worried too much about it.

I'm so glad to know someone besides me thinks that. I always get a bit stuffy at night and wake up sniffly until I get up and about, takes about half an hour before I get cleared up. I am hoping that's all that's going on with my little guy. Nonetheless, I will try to ease some of the mystery factors that are possibly causing him any stress, whatever they may be...

The only two things I can think of that maybe possible might be stressing him are his food, or mites. When I adopted Maz (the rat in question) he was on a diet of Reggie Rat food, but I gradually have switched him over to all Oxbow. Perhaps I made the change to quickly? I know he's not a fan of the Oxbow, but he still eats it. I will try mixing some Reggie Rat back in and see if he stops stressing over when he's going to get some 'decent' food.

Only other thing I can think of is mites. One of my very old boys got them a few weeks ago, everyone had a dose of Revolution two weeks ago today. Maz and his brother have been kind of scratchy the past day or so, but I thought Revolution works for roughly a month before needing to be reapplied? I will apply some more if someone tells me that two weeks is not too soon...?
