So this morining I notice Toby had a wee spot of porph on his nose ...I thought it was just morining porph ...after work today when he got up ..he had none ...but after supper I cam downstairs for out time ..and it was there again ..just a wee bit. He is not sneezing or breathing strange, nor is there discharge from his eyes.
I was gone to Dominican for a week and returned on Thursday ..I'm not sure if this is stress, from having different people take care of him? he is also a very laid back rat, and they were eating diffrently while I was gone
I called my vet, he is booked until friday .. so he told me to call back tomorrow with Toby's weight and he will give us something just incase.

So when I get meds tomorrow I am going to wait it out and see how he is first nd if he starts showing RI signs then I will give it to him ..also should get enought for everyone?? because if it is a RI it will be contagious.
Also what meds would be best for this?

Also Is there anything I could do?

Is this rat going to the VET? porphrin is not necessarily an infection. Since he was stressed, it could be stress related. The only symptom is porphrin, then why jump to anti-biotics right away?????

Why not wait it out a few days, or take him to the Vet.

I'm amazed at how antitibiotics are just given out willy nilly This is why we have resistant strains

- No he is not going to the vet until Friday.
- I am getting meds tomorrow for a RI just incase he needs it befor Friday.
- My vet does not give medication out willy nilly, he knows when rats get sick it can happen quickly and he dose not want me to be stuck with a sick rat and no medicine

antibiotic resistance is often attributed to improper use of antibiotics in respect of duration. Specifically when a prescription is given for too short of a time - or the individual feels that the infection is cleared up and stops giving medications - then the bacteria that survive go on to develop resistant strains.

I hope everything works out for your boy and that it was just stress!
