Partially shut eye...

One of our new rattie boys has one eye that is partially shut. I think it might have gotten irritated by something or maybe some debris is in it, but I have no idea. What do you all suggest, other than immediately taking him to vet? Any home remedies?

Does it look red? like porphyrin?

no haven't seen any red/porphyrin.
i'll take a picture soon and post it so you get a better idea of what I'm talking about.

He opens it almost completely every now and then, but when we breathe near or on him, he immediately shuts it. His other eye seems perfectly fine.

Sounds to me like there's something in it. But, yanno... I'm no vet.

I would think a saline flush in a rattie eye would be hard to do.

If he has debris, he should resolve that on his own.
Maybe he just get scared when you get too close? Some rats will do that.
