I have lost some rats this year due to different things. I also lost remmys cage mate Loki who as been with remmy sense i got them. Remmy is two years old and he seems to have done a 180 after losing him. he seems like he is depressed and is not as out going as he used to be and likes to sleep a lot also he will not have anything to do with my brother now and the only thing we can think of is that he was the one to remove loki when it happened. Even when he's out he just sleeps with me instead of running all over the place and getting into trouble like he use to. Now what i am curious about is weather i should just keep him by him self or if i should get another rat. also if i get another rat would a younger one be better then a older one or should age not really matter?

I recommend getting 2 younger rats when introducing to an older rat. 2 young ones will keep themselves busy and playing and not annoy the old fella. Also, I've seen old rats become completely rejuvenated by having the babies around.

really my parents seem to think that he will be fine as long as i keep giving him lots of attention but i just hate seeing him all mopey! also at the moment i maybe only able to get one for right now so will one baby still be a good idea?

I prefer to keep my older rats with a couple younger guys. I'm convinced the younger rats keep the older ones feeling young at heart.

yeah so i should just keep a very close eye on them. I think that would be the best thing for him. thank you for your help!

I would never suggest one baby with one adult especially one as old as 2. My reasoning is, when your older boy passes away, you are left with another singleton and the whole thing starts all over with a teenage rat who might not be open to playdates with newbies haha Personally, 2 babies is your best best.

yeah thats on of the reasons my parents don't want me to get one but they would rather have me keep him alone.

Well, then I guess 1 with him is better, and work on them for another when the time comes which we hope isn't for a very very long time

haha me being a parent who thought one rat was ok, till i was educated, they arent. They do need a companion, and Jorats is 100% right on two, we have two male babies, i intro'd to my older males, they hardly played before, they are lazy bums, now i see them run and frolic with the babies, the babies, play all the time, they need one close to their age, i have seen my older boys get annoyed by the youngsters antics.

Our old girl luna who was a lone, became a different rat when she had a buddy, she ran around and played and was generally happier.

Hopefully you can figure out what is best, if he is in good health other wise, he could use a friend, it could really help renew his outlook on being happy.
