We can say that our old man has not aged very gracefully. Dominic first started showing signs of HED at maybe 20 months of age and has gotten progressively worse over the past year. He is at the point where we know his health is in its' final decline, whether that is a few days or a few months is not quite certain. What is certain is that our 32 month old is having some behavior we are not sure what to make of. His symptoms have progressed so slowly we are uncertain (as he is our first and oldest rat) if these are just old age deterioration or something else. Dom is on basically a maintenance dose of Baytril as he is prone to URI flare ups.

Dom's rears have gotten very weak, and he has pretty much lost all muscle mass in his back legs. When it first started to get bad, he had some behavior that seemed much like neurological issues (difficulty holding food, etc) which we were unsure if they were neuro or due to him compensating for his altered balance by bracing himself with his front paws instead of using them to grab and hold food. As it has progressed, it almost seems like his fronts are being affected. He can't bathe himself well, we get a plug off of him a few times a day, he can't clean his ears well, etc.

He is not head tilting, nor trying to circle, but he is no longer able to eat or drink normally. We found him rather dehydrated a few days ago. He takes Ensure (6-10 cc's twice a day) and some lab block mush, but hasn't been eating block or drinking from his water bottle. Some of his postures look very neuro but they are not always present (curled paws, prayer position, etc) but he goes back to his normal as soon as he moves again.

-Should we try him on Prednisone and see if he shows signs of improvement? I know if he has a slow forming PT Pred could give us days to weeks, but I doubt we have much longer than that with him regardless. We just want him to be as comfortable as possible.

-He has been unable to clean his ears well and shakes his head when you rub them. Is there anything we can do for him, or does this need a vet visit?

-Is he getting enough nutrition with 6-10 cc's of Ensure 2 or 3 times a day? Should we try baby cereal, olive oil, etc as well? He eats very little block mush, and we want to make sure he is getting enough vitamins, etc.

It does sound like it may be more that HED, can you get some pics of some of his postures for us to see? Personally, none of my rats have ever been fans of lab block mush but they will never rarely turn away lab block dust mixed with baby food (peas and sweet potatoes are the faves here) and a little bit of water if necessary. It also sounds like he may benefit from a water bowl instead of a bottle too, something shallow that he can get his head into. :hugs:

Once those hind quarters go lots of things change.

They cannot scratch - so you have to rub ears, scratch sides
They lose flexibility and balance so have issues grooming - you have to check for penis plugs, and make sure their belly is clean and anywhere else that needs it
A low water bowl might be best at this stage. I also give my oldies a bowl of Ensure in the morning to keep them going. You can water it down to make sure he's getting enough water.
He likely is going through a progressive renal failure and the fluids will go in faster and come out faster as well as the rat's kidney's can't keep up and they start drinking more to flush the kidney's "manually".

Watch to see if your neuro signs are more signs of age, tiredness and balance then actual neuro symptoms then go from there.

What is the best way to clean his ears, just rub them for him? We give lots of scritchies and take care of penis plugs a few times a day.

MomRat made up some "hydration solution" which we have in a shallow bowl for him.

We've never had an old feeble rat before, what is the difference between old age behavior versus neuro in his balance and posture? He is showing what we would normally consider neuro symptoms(prayer position, clenched paws, some tooth testing), but not all the time or consistently.

if you mean the PT pushback with his forelegs stiffly in front of him? Just remember he's probably pushing back so he can sit/balance on his hind end. Clubbing can be an age thing as well when they get feeble, and I find that my older rats start to chew on books and will test nibble things that they might not have...sometimes it might be discomfort, other times I think they might be getting a little senile. With neuro symptoms a main one is confusion, and dull eyes.

Well, it sounds like he is just really old. He doesn't seem confused, just slow to get woken up and alert.

We'll just keep pumping Ensure into him (he took 11 cc's this morning!) and trying to keep him clean. Little guy just looks worn out all the time any more.

We're hoping he will let us know when it is time, or go in his sleep like Jacob.
