Oh dear - scabby ears and bumpy tails.

Today, I decided to adopt to little bucks from an ad on Craigslist.

I met with her, and she clearly cared a great deal for her animals. I met the bucks, and inquired about the scabs on one of the buck's ears. She said she believed that the young boys from her litter (this particular buck was left over from a litter her fiance's rat had had three weeks prior to her own litter...) were biting on his ears.
As I had already fallen in love with these two boys, I took this in stride, and decided I would take them.

I've had a few hours to look them both over.
The larger of the two has severe, cauliflower like scabbing along the edges of his ears, and some bumps/scabs on his tail.
The younger, smaller buck has no visible scabbing on his ears, but a couple of tiny white bumps I only noticed with close inspection. His tail also has bumps and scabs. (I would relate the bumps to looking something like white heads, though not always white but flesh colored).

I've been looking it up, and I haven't found any mention of rats nibbling on each other causing this sort of damage. I'm afraid they may have mites, or some other type of parasite. And as my mother has held them, and then proceeded to hold my older bucks, I'm afraid they may have spread within a single day of having my baby rats!

Other than the scabbing, they appear to be in excellent health. They love being held already, and have no problem snuggling up against my neck (which makes me believe my instinct to trust the woman who sold them to me was correct: she genuinely cared for them). They are extremely active, and climbing all over the cage.

I have previously treated my older bucks for mites with Revolution, and it cleared up the scabbing symptoms straight away. My concern is that these two are so young, and small (I'd hazard a guess at 4 and 7 weeks, as they are 3 weeks apart).
Advice? (Yes, the most obvious advice is: take them to the vet. I'm looking into it first thing after class tomorrow. But I'd like to hear any other thoughts.) (I haven't been able to get any decent pictures of the scabbing.)

Very interesting! You hear of those mites on dogs, but rats?
If they turn out to have those mites, I hope you let the lady know so she can treat all her animals.
If it is the same mite as dogs have, could they have gotten it from dogs? I think it causes mange in dogs.

Oh, dear.

Yes, Sunny's case looks very similar to the scabbing I'm seeing on Star (the older buck)'s ears. I guess I'll need to start pawning off some old belongings I have to get together some cash to bring them to the vet. I have some money put aside for vet needs, but as I now have four boys...

Thank you all for the input. It's a shame that Revolution isn't effective on this type of mites, I have two vials left from when I treated my older boys for fur mites! It worked wonders. (One of them was affected terribly. He was so stressed, that he was losing weight and constantly had the red icky stuff on his nose. Since treatment, he has rebounded wonderfully).

I'm keeping the youngins upstairs, away from the others. And I've instructed everyone in my house not to go from playing with the little ones straight to playing with the big boys. If cross-contamination hasn't already occurred from my first-day stupidity, hopefully I can avoid it!

A very belated update on the situation with the mites. I treated all my boys with Revolution, just in case the young ones had normal fur mites as well. Since treatment, Star's ears have cleared up entirely, though they look a little ragged ragged from the severe scabbing.

I'm unsure as to why Revolution worked, when everything I read about the mites indicated that they would need treatment with ivermectin.

Could you please help! My boyfriend has just bought 2X gorgeous little girls (from some guy he works with *sigh*). They are about a month old. They both have little white bumps on their ears and tails. They haven't cauliflowered, as described in the first post, but they are getting more noticable.

We live in South Africa and due to my mouse obsession I know that most (if not all) SA vets want nothing to do with treating rats or mice so I need to know if there is a non-chemical treatment for rat mites: baths, olive oil rubs etc.

OK I have put some feelers out for vets that will treat rats. I believe that for rats Ivermectin should only be given orally? How do you manage the volume/ammount that should be given.... The babies are friendly but still getting used to being handled...

I think they are too young for ivermectin at this point and you will have to wait.

for an adult its the size of uncooked grain of rice. You have to make sure you don't overdose as well.
