There is a disconcerting pile of poop in my rats cage. The poop is roughly an inch long and is smushy, quite different from their regular little poop pellets. It is in the cage where my two ~one year old females live. They are eating normally and drinking and there has been no change in diet (lab blocks, vegetables, cheerios, pasta, etc).

My husband and I have been out of town for a week and our friends came over everyday to check on them and feed them and they said everything seemed normal. We have been home for 2 days and they have seemed fine other then a few irregular poops.

Have you guys seen this kind of problem before?

Did you notice the change in poop the first day you got back? Is it possible your friends gave them unhealthy treats? Some people don't realize how very important a diet is to a pet.
If that's not the case, it could have been the change in routine upset their tummies and they should get back to normal soon enough.
