Hi everyone I'm new here (not to ratties) and have never had baby rats. Yesterday while looking at local online classified ad's for some rat's I could rescue, I came across the dreaded "feeder breeder" :( I couldn't help myself and went right away to get two babies who were being sold as "Food or pet don't care. 4 weeks" I literally felt sick from the stench of these 50+ rats being kept in drawers! He was picking them up by their tails and tossing them around showing me the different types he had. I ended up just saying "those two" and getting the hell out of there. For some odd reason I didn't even think to check the sexes. I was literally about to cry and couldn't breath. Now my concern is whether they are male/female and how to check without scaring them more than they are. I have set up an awesome home. They are relaxed, eating, drinking and cuddling together peacefully. They hold still when I pet them and seem to be okay with that so far, but I have tried to pick one up to check the sex and it was NOT happy. I really am worried about them breeding but again have no had baby rats this young and do not know when that might become and issue. Also I have been feeding them over ripe bananas, regular rattie mix, romaine lettuce, apples, plain yogurt and different plain cereal mixes just trying to see what they like. Any advice is welcomed and needed! Thanks guys :) Will post pics in a little bit.

Hi and welcome.
You are probably safe till about 6 weeks old before they start to mate if they are male/female. It should be very obvious right now if they are different. The males have very large furry testicles and females have nipples.
If you have two different sexes, they will need to be separated soon. As for their food, a good quality rat block is best like Harlan Teklad 2014 and or Oxbow Regal Rat. Veggies are great for rats. I wouldn't give any yogurt though or anything dairy.
