I got Nein at a pet store about a little over a year ago. (I know, pet stores are bad. It wasn't our intention at the time, we were just getting supplies and fell in love. :wallbang: )

What would you consider her color/pattern to be?: I called the vet today to set up an appointment and they wanted to know... I didn't realize that I had no idea. :?

Yesterday morning, I heard a stir in our new critter nation. I was about to fall asleep (5am) but I groggily got up to make sure the kids hadn't knocked over their water bottle. Nein was acting strange. She climbed to the top of the cage, and immediately fell. She climbed up again, and I managed to open the door and catch her before she could again. She was shaking, like she was scared (possibly just from the fall...) and clung to me. Her breaths were fast, clicking and gasping. (she was actually making these clicking/gasping noises about a week ago - and was unable to walk straight. Kept falling over, etc. But I thought she was choking on something and she was 100% better after about 20 minutes) I took her back to the couch, and she jumped out of my arms about 3 feet from the couch and landed on it. (she's never jumped before) and she had pooped on me - only about 60% solid. (she's never poo'd on me before)

She refused to be held, any time I tried she would jump away again. Eventually I just let her sit on the couch. I let her sit there for about a hour, just being near. At around 7 in the morning, I was feeling super exhausted so I set up the spare cage (shorter, so she wouldn't be able to climb to the top and hurt herself again). Water and food included, of course.

Over the next 24 hours I monitored her. She barely moved. Didn't respond to me (had her out for about 6 hours, and she just sat still) - she ate nothing, she drank nothing (and still hasn't).

Vet appointment in about a hour. :sad3:

Sorry for the rant. I ranted at Smex last night in chat too. I'm just so worried, I never had a sick kidlette before.

I'd say she's a mink variberk.
I hope she's ok... that sounds like a stroke or seizures. Poor thing. Hopefully you'll get dexamethasone or prednisone, it might help.

Oh, ty Jo. I also meant to ask what kind of medicine I should hopefully come home with. <3
Boyfriend said she looked bad enough to just be put down, so really hoping there's a chance. I hope I'm just over-reacting...

If it's a stroke, she can recover quite well.
I'd probably ask for Baytril and get a shot to dexamethasone. And maybe ask for pred to give at home as well.
If your vet is an exotic vet, he might have a better idea of what your rat needs. But no matter what, it's worth giving her a chance and trying meds first.

*writes that down* Thanks, Jo. Knowing there's hope has made me stop crying. :hugs:

So glad I found this forum.

She seems better today. When I put her back in the CN, she slowly walked around it. Still breathing and gasping a bit - but not falling. I have to get ready to go... I shall report back in a few hours.

Thanks, everybody.
Unfortunately, things didn't work out and we had to put her down.
Much crying happened in the waiting room. Even the boyfriend had to grab a tissue for himself. (But don't tell him I told you)

Nein was very distressed, had a very irregular heartbeat, and could barely breathe.

Goodbye, little Goober.

I'm so sorry, Roo. :tearful:

Run free at the Bridge Little Nein.... and send your mom a ladybug to let her know that you are ok. :love6:

Thanks, everybody.
She was boyfriends first ratty, and first rat lost.
She was such a sweetie.
Even when she was cuddling against my cheek to say goodbye, she didn't give me any allergic reaction. :giggle:

Spaz, she does look a lot like Moggy. Like they could have been related. <3 Beautiful ratties.
