My rat hates being picked up/pet

I just got my boy about 2 and a half weeks ago after giving him a week to settle in I started trying to handle him. I let him run around my bedroom for as long as he wants or until he runs back into his cage. Every time i try to pick him up he runs off and the same when i try to pet him. He will take treats from my hands and crawl all over me when im sitting on the floor but he will not let me touch him and when i do he squirms and tries to escape. What should i do to fix this?

Does he have any cage buddies?

He may be just be very active. It's great that he will take treats from you and crawl all over you; it demonstrates he is not afraid of you. Spend lots of time with him and interact with him. As he gets older and lazier, he will probably spend more time with you.
