Yesterday I was giving my rats peas when I noticed that Soleil had a seriously injured back toe. I take them out every day so It had to have happened while I was sleeping. I took her into the vet and she was put on Baytril to ward off infection. The vet said she suspected it might be broken or it could simple be sprained. The swelling has already gone down significantly after two doses of baytril but I was wondering if anyone has any theories on what she could have done to herself. I separated she and her sister from the two older girls to give her some time to heal. She's very content to be with her sister and doesn't seem to be in pain as she's still playing and climbing the cage. The vet also said she would prescribe metacam if she seemed to be in pain but because it can have adverse reactions when mixed with other medications was hesitant to give it to her as she is still very young unless it was necessary.

Here are some pictures taken at the vets office:

Thanks for any thoughts you have to offer

The first thing I did was take her to the vet..I said that in my original post. She's on Baytril and she's doing well on it..the swelling has gone down significantly since yesterday.

When you post in ER is an emergency not an emergency if you took her to the vet hence what I said to take her to one because it was in the emergency section and the skin looks pushed up.

Many toe injuries heal just fine. Recently one of my rats got a broken toe. I don't know how it happened, but she had to have the toe amputated and she is now doing fine.

Sometimes they get a toe caught in something. I suspect that my Teagan was checking out the "enemy" rats and got bitten, even though I took preecautoons to prevent the two groups getting at each other. Things have settled down since intros started.

My first rat with a toe injury got her toe bitten when she jumped onto the top of a cage of other rats. Poor little thing oozed blood all night; I was up with her til 0500 to make sure she was OK.
