He has been sick for about 5 days now. I took him to the vet as soon as I could.
He's been on baytril/doxycycline for about 4 days.
Symptoms: lethargy, wheezing, gagging and drooling.
3 days ago he was drooling out this dark brown stuff and it was everywhere. I was horrified and I thought he was going to die.
He has lost a considerable amount of weight as well.
The vet said he thinks it's pneumonia and that it could just run it's course and then once it's over, he will get better. When I brought him to the vet, euthanasia was in the back of my mind. But the vet said he doesn't usually like to tell people to euthanize. He said that he wants to let the owner decide. He said that Jasper was still moving about and looking around which was a good sign.
I have been steaming him with pots of hot water placed near his cage and then covering with a thin bed sheet. I think it has been helping cause everytime I do the steam thing, the crackling noise he makes when he is breathing seems to go away.
The doctor also offered me to buy the Oxbow Critical Care formula. I gave it to him last night and this morning. I have been feeding him every 2 hours starting today. I have also given him Ensure, and powder oatmeal. I also mixed in one melted chocolate chip into the oatmeal and watered it down more so that it would be runny and easy for him to swallow. Today when I fed him he ate a lot. I have been using a syringe to feed him.
I checked his teeth to see if they were normal and they were. I also considered that he might be choking but I don't think that his the case either because he wasn't showing any signs of choking when I initially had noticed that he was sick.
I think he might pull through this one because he is eating now (before he was refusing) and he's not getting any worse. In fact, the wheezing is getting a bit less now. He is still mobile. He's also drooling less. And his eyes aren't red.
I wish I had an oxygen machine to give him some oxygen to help him breathe better. I might buy one on ebay. But for now I just put a big house plant next to the cage to add more oxygen to the room and remove any pollution. I also have an air purifier and it's fairly warm in the room.
I prayed a lot and I have cried about it a few times because I care about him so much and I hate to see him suffering. It's been really tough for me because I had exams at the same time he was sick so I have been really stressed out. Thank goodness my exams are over now and I can devote all my time and effort to nursing him back to health.
