Angel and Megan were the runts of Bronny's litter, they only ever had soft fur as babies and have had harsh dirty fur all their lives. Never truly got sick, but just never seemed well with coat, etc. Angel has gotten thin and bony, but she's over 2.

Tonight I see Angel rear up against the side of the cage and I saw something not quite right...

I pulled her out for a look-see...

Poor Angel. :sad-p: I have no idea how she did this or when...

I'll be calling Dr. Munn for a quote tomorrow, since the Chiro has eaten most of my money :( I need to know how much I am going to need to beg/borrow or steal. :(

Lucky girl to get to go to the vet.

Poor little Toufir is stuck with me using small finger nail clippers ... weekly

When Caleb was a young adult he somehow knocked his front teeth out of alinement. The vet managed to get them straightened out.

Is that due to to some injury she incurred or something that is innate in her and might be recurring? I'm quite surprised actually Shelagh that this is not on your list of capabities. It sure will be after Angel sees the vet. Beyond my comfort zone but I've sure heard of people having to do monthly maintenance on a kids teeth.

I'm real sorry for Angel & you that you have this to deal with. I know if it needs periodic doing that you won't just do it, you'll make a point of finding the easiest way for Angel & you to do it together. You always share your experience, so we will all benefit from this and in return I can only put Angel on my Hopes & Prayers list and hope the vet can do a once-&-for-all for her. If not then you - her mom - will definitely be gathering suggestions and finding the easiest way to do it for her. And passing it on....
Kisses to your Angel girl.

I hate clipping rat teeth!

Rat Guide has instructions on how to do it. I found the most important thing was to find the right tool. I use a very small pair of side cutters.

I would hope that Dr. Munn would either give you a break on the price by now - or at least allow you credit! You've probably paid for half the equipment in her practice by now! :giggle:

Funnily enough, a few months ago, my vet and I were discussing that I have never run into malloclusion or any teeth issues yet.
I do know one thing, Dr. Munn won't clip teeth without anesthetizing first...which I am not sure Angel will be able to do...we might need your prayers sooner than later. :(

Teeth clipping ranks up there with needles and eye issues....and I have managed to get past them intact...

I am just praying this isn't going to be a $200 vet visit.

My vet charges $20 for a clipping. But I've been doing my own. It's not that hard. If you can buy a cat nail clipper, you might be able to do it. Nessie cracked her top teeth so now three of them are always misaligned so I clip her teeth every couple of weeks. Same with Jasper, I need to clip his every month or so. It's much easier with two people though. You need to have Sarah visit!

I cheat and give the rat a small dose of nitrazepam (sp?) as a sedative first. Makes life a lot easier because if they're wide awake they fight like little tigers!

Awwww poor girl! :( I remember when I found my boys like that (hairless, bred as feeders.. predictable), I was about 14 and it upset me so much. My mom grabbed a pair of nailclippers and clipped them for me. To be honest it's not that bad- I know it sounds bad but if she's in pain, even just trimming them a bit for her (especially the jagged bit) will make her feel much better. They got like that so quickly that one day she was fine, the next they're already that bad- you'll have to go to get them trimmed so frequently that it's worth learning to do it yourself.

I dunno, I'd really ask myself if I could possibly learn to do it at home and save the kid (and future kids) the stress of the outing. I'd have to learn if it was going to be an ongoing thing. Vet cost is right up there with rent and hydro. But I'd like to continue keeping all 3 up.
When I have to do something unpleasant to my kids distraction has always been my best ally. Fidget hates having her feet tended to but she will stand still with them in a soak or having them coated with something if she is licking up CoolWhip at the time. I spread it thin in a dish so it takes her a lot of time to get much.
Maybe if your girl knew there was a bowl of nice waiting during the clip?

Yup, that's a major. Thank god I've never had to deal with a kids' teeth needing ongoing care .. I've dealt with most of the expected problems, but thankfully I've bypassed that one. Personally.
But I've sure had ratbuds that had kids that were needing it. What I learned is that some kids have a problem with malocclusion and their person has to take them to the vet and spend a bunch of money but if they're smart they ask to be tutored in the 1st visit if it will be an ongoing problem so they can do it at home. And everyone with a kid that needed monthly care did it themselves thereafter.
I guess you have to learn this. Easy for me to say. Whole different story if I had to DO it than say it.
But apparently you can do it yourself quite easily and screwing up is highly unlikely. More like trimming a toenail than surgery surprisingly. That's coming from those that have learned to do it. Not all of them were rocket scientists.
I'd be scared raisonless, but apparently it's not not a big deal.

SQ has to do it weekly on Toufir, and it's a struggle. Poor little girl squeaks whenever SQ goes to pick her up, she dreads it so much. I wonder if it would be possible for SQ to get a small dose of anxiolytic to give her a few minutes before.... never thought of it, and anesthetizing at Halifax vet prices would be out of the question.

yes ... as a student I have no choice but to do it myself as her teeth grow very fast and need to be done weekly. Vet here charges 2xs or more what my vet at home charged ...

But having the vet do it when they are under would be best if you can afford it ... I always had the vet trim Caleb's teeth as they became bad (again) when he got older.

So Angel has developed malocclusion, so this could be something that happens every 3 weeks for the rest of her life, which is fine. :)

Dr. Munn told me she gives them a teeny whiff of gas then she actually grinds their teeth down with a tiny rotary file (I had seen it previously)...there is no pressure, or danger of splintering, and she is able to get a really good natural angle on each tooth. I , of course, was hoping I could watch, but since she gases them as she does, she said she couldn't, BUT she said next time, she will be prepared and bring in her own camera and take pics for me :)

We are hoping with the nice slant on the tooth edge that it might resolve a little with natural bruxxing but don't have our hopes too high. I think Angel is feeling a bit better now...she's stopped rolling out her tongue and bruxxing like before the trim. :joy:

They look pretty good now :)
