I'm moving in a couple of weeks, and it will take some time to set up a rat room or safe rat play area like I have here.
Right now my rats have a good sized bedroom to play in- the entire room is theirs!

when I move I'm not really sure where they will play, they tend to jump off my bed! and one girl may jump off a table, so I'm wondering if I'll need to get a play pen for them til I can get a room set up (that's over $100 expense for the play pen so I'll have to sell the extra single CN if I do that)

but mostly I'm worried that my kids are going to be very upset not having the amount of room and freedom they are used to now

is there any way to ease the transition for them?

and for those ppl who have jumpers, how do you get them to stay on a table or bed?

also anything I need to do for them regarding the move, that I may not have considered?

I"m feeling a bit overwhelmed with the little details of moving and am worried I'm overlooking something important

My rats adjusted very fast. So did the boys i just got from eagle. they act like they own the room like the rest of the rats.

but don't your rats have a room to themselves or a part of a room?

this is what I am worried about, my rats are going from having a huge room to play in- to just a table top til I can rat safe an area for them (this may take months, there's several things I need to buy that I wont' have money for right away)

so I worry, are they going to be frustrated and angry about the change from a lot of space to much much less space to play?

it isnt the space it is the out time itself. Some may try to jump down but it is getting out that matters to them.

oh ok., thanks!I hope so!! I was thinking maybe they'd like the bathroom in the new place I think I can rat proof that fairly easily but its a very very small room

most of my rats like water, maybe they'll like playing in the tub
:wink2:

I suggest getting the Grrreat Wall for them. It creates a fairly large play space, and is 24" high, meaning rats can't jump over it (I mean, unless your rats can jump over 24 inches o_O). It's around $50. A bit pricey, but a very good investment. You can set it up in a cleared space where you can keep an eye on them easily, and put some toys/hidey boxes in there for their free range time. This way you're not keeping them on the table where you'll constantly be checking up on them and getting nothing else done out of fear that they'll jump off the table and hide somewhere.

It all depends on the rats. Some love new adventure and adjust quite well while others will take some time. But eventually, they'll all be happy again cause they have the best out time ever.

I think they are pretty adaptable....they might all be a bit quieter and less adventurous because of the new smells but as soon as they get used to it they will love whatever area they have....a play pen is a great idea until you get a space set up for them...but I have used the bathroom (as long as it is safe) for out times and it has worked great.....

um, my rats can jump more than two feet easily
I had thought about the Martins playpen for safety sake cuz it has a lid but I can't get in it with them (I have a bad back and SI joint etc)
I could get inside the Grreat wall from what I understand but they can jump that. I've got some very athletic rats :giggle:
when they are out, it's time for us to play together, so I'm not doing anything else, But they are so fast I am worried they'll take off on me.
Really it's mostly Lovey and Smidgen that like to venture off so I'll need to keep a closer eye on those two
Smidgen will get nervous in a new place and come back to me but Lovey is totally fearless and just wants to explore
that girl is a handful.
she'll jump up on something I dont' want her on and I'll take her down time after time, and just when I'm thinking it's time to put her back in the cage if this is going to be how she spends her entire out time
she must pick up on my frustration and she suddenly starts licking me all over!!
so of course I cave in and let her stay out
how can I be mad at a kissy Lovey girl? :giggle:

I was going to say the same thing... rats can easily jump two feet and most will.
