most likely causes for sores on a rat's belly?PHOTO added

asking for a friend, I don't have photos yet but what would be the most common causes for sores and/or scabs on a male rats belly
(NOT a recently neutered boy)

one of her rats died suddenly and now there are two others with "issues"- it sounds like there may be mites involved but at least one of them has sores or scabs on his belly and this is confusing

they are all a bit on the big side....

All depending on what it looks like... it could be mites, an old abscess, pyoderma, cyst, skin cancer...

ok it's not on his belly its on his side, right where his back feet would reach to scratch

it looks a bit like the itty bitty abscesses that my girl Hope gets on her tail (turns out she does not groom her tail at all, it's gross! all this time I thought it was a dark colored tail, it's just filthy, ewww!)

anyway what does that look like?

That is a typical spot for scratching when being bitten by mites.
If that were my rat, I'd do a mite treatment.
