Hey everyone, I was wondering if there was a possibility that only 1 rat in a group could have mites?

Our oldest girl Cookies has been scratching like crazy, although its hard to say exactly when it started, its probably been about 6 weeks going on. She has some scabbing, but its 98% down one side of her body. She is 31 months old, and is displaying some signs of HED and shes also dealing with some skin issues on her tail (ongoing, vet knows about it, we just have to keep it clean and periodically help some abscesses to drain).

At first I thought it was age related, and then I began thinking maybe mites? However, our other two aren't exhibiting any signs. No scratching, no scabs. And they all live together (although they have only been in the same cage for about 2.5 weeks now).

If Cookies had mites, wouldn't they also be on the other two? If it isn't mites, does anyone have any idea what it might be?

Edit: I Mean that 98% of the scabs are on one side, not that one side of her body is 98% covered!

It's possible the scabbing on one side of the body is caused by excessive grooming due to neurological issues/HED but it is a good idea to treat for mites anyway. If she has mites, the entire cage would have mites but she may be the only one that's been affected by them.

I actually have pretty much the same question. One of my girls seems to be scratching all the time, and I have noticed a few scabs (3 or 4), but the other seems just fine.

Many rats have mites without being affected but if their immune system is weakened by illness or age they can start to show symptoms. If you suspect mites it's always a good idea to treat for them if only to rule them out.

Yup.

Thanks. I guess its another trip to the vet for us. I feel like we've been there practically every week (we just finished treating for URIs and one mammary tumor!).

If you have a relationship with your vet and have been in to see them recently, you may be able to get revo from them without paying for yet another office visit - just a prescription pick up.
