Hi everyone
I cannot remember my old log in and I'm back with some questions.
I know I should never have 1 rat alone, but I just put down miss Mocha today. 5 ratties down to 1 in the last year. It's heartbreaking to keep losing them to tumors or unresolvable URI's.
Anyhow, the one I have left was given to me by our vet. She was a rescue from a hawk proving ground ? and has always been a very skittish girl. I got her at 2 months old, she was fixed at 7 weeks. I've had her since August 2009. She has been with the same rats since day one.
In the last few weeks I've noticed she has little sores and haven't thought much of it. I have heard her and Mocha having some pretty nasty spats-normal for Mocha-she was the dominant rat in the cage. They have injured each other (all 5 I had) every so often.
Well, Mocha was put down this morning and I've been spending a lot of time with miss Pockets. She has little sores on her left side-shoulder area mostly and a bit here are there near her ear and one near her nose. Again, I'm thinking injury.

Should I go forward and treat her with revolution? She isn't a real big rat, probably in the high 300/low 400 range. I'd also like to add, we have been fighting a respiratory infection for weeks. Mocha has been really sick and declining, so I was treating both. They were taking Doxy, Enro, Metacam, Durlactin, Noni juice, COQ10, some vitamin mix...and that may be it. The rescue I got 3 girls from provides me with medications.

help............

Lastly, I have 2 cats, should I be worried about them getting mites, should that be what I'm dealing with? The rats and cats have no physical contact, but the rat room is sometimes visited by the cats who lay on the floor some distance away or the bed, but they do walk by the cage.

First, I believe *most* mites are species specific, so there is little chance of them passing them on to each other. Treating them all would not be a bad idea though, especially if you can take a small amount of Revo from one of the cat's tubes to dose a rat. It's good to rule out parasites, especially if they are sick, because parasites can weaken the immune system.

Second, I would take a look at her coordination, her balance, and her feet. The reason I say this is that I too had a rat with many scabs on one side when she developed bumblefoot. Injuries, mobility issues, infections, or neurological issues can cause a rat to over groom one side, especially if they are compensating for not being able to properly groom the other side.

No bumblefoot, I have my rats on weekly washed pillow cases and cut up sheets with pieces of tile.

She isn't itching at all, she isn't doing a lot of cleaning.

Revolution takes care of almost everything it could be; You didn't mention scabbing on the ears, or I would say go with ivermectin(for sarcoptic mange). If the scabbing doesn't go away after you dose and wait 2-3 weeks, then she might have gotten a skin infection from scratching so much, but if she's been on heavy antibiotics that's unlikely, unless there is a specific antibiotic needed to treat it.

I took her to the exotic vet, he said it's not mites or lice. He said its some sort of a skin breakout due to hormones???
