My brothers rat has mites, tiny brown dots hanging at the bottom of the hair shaft.

What do i do to effectivly get rid of them? Can i get them? Can other rats get them?

My other brother has a liquid spray for mites the active ingredient is: sodium laurel sulfate (0.1%) and the rest is water, carrot, corn oil, glycerin, guar gum, onion powder, orange pulp, soy bean oil, tallow, vanillin. (this is for reptiles)

Mites are to tiny to be visible to the naked eye so if it's a bug it woudl be lice. Have you taken a good look at them? If it's lice you'll see the legs. :sick2: It could just be a build up of buck grease. A good bath will take care of that.

But just to be on the safe side your guys need a dose of Revolution. It the best, safest and most effective way to deal with buggies of any sort. Your 2nd choice would be ivermectin but it takes a bit more effort and takes a bit longer to work. Of course in any case you would need to give the cage and everything in it a thorough cleaning to kill any beasts hiding in the bedding, toys, etc.

hmmm,

Is it the same as human lice? because they dont look like the lice that i have seen on humans. They are about 1mm big, brown in colour and cling to the hair shaft. I have carefully taken a few out and watched them surry around, so iam not sure what iam dealing with...

Iam getting revolution tomorrow (for kittens) and treating all of my rats and my brothers, power washing and disinfecting thier bedding and cages, plus my bedding and clothes i have been wearing.

I wish i could kno what iam dealing with, whether it can be passed onto me or the dogs...

Lucky for you lice are species specific, meaning they do not cross from one species to another. The only thing you might catch is the heebie jeebies.

Ok so the lice iam dealing with are different to the ones human gets. Thank god! Thanks for the tips!

Thirding (?) the lice. Easier to get rid of than mites, but the Revolution should do the trick. I would advise freezing any paper or wood-based products in their cage for 48 hours and doing the same to any paper or wood-based bedding you plan on using in the future. :)

Lice are also much easier to get rid of than mites . :) blw I have only had mice with this problem, how much revolution would you put on a rat? can't be to prepared ya know! :wink2:
