All these ratties and I have my first Dr Edgar toe amputation done to my rex boy lear. Both groups are out, and i make the bigger group space smaller so I could spend time with my rex boys, well sniff and sniff and chomp. Boys are naturally territorial so I should of taken then into consideration when I made my wall, all these boys you would think I would know better.

Lear on one side, Edgar, Lenny and Eli on the other. I heard Lear squeak. I picked him up looked at his face, kissed him and set him in the cage. I thought his nose was bitten but I didn't see a mark, which is common here they will bite and one will scream and nothing. I picked him up a little bit later and found this

I gave him some meds and locked them up for the night...Poor guy! I feel bad but there wasnt any blood. I have a white shirt on and I have nothing on it and I held him right after it.

Does it look like the tip was ripped off or the finger itself? I am guessing this care is like any other, keep it clean watch for infections?

One of mine lost a fingertip... was it Cera or Petrie, Shelagh? In any event, Kelly (their bio mom) was huffing outside the cage and someone had their paw on the cage and *squeak*! I think it was Cera (see now I'm going to have to check, lol).

It actually healed up entirely on its own, I didn't have to do anything - it didn't even bleed very much. And she didn't seem unduly uncomfortable, just kind of surprised.

ouchie.....glad he is okay. I know when a nail is ripped off it bleeds like crazy...but maybe a clean bitten off toe does not.....good thing rats heal fast.

I picked him up right after it happened. I mean as soon as he squeaked it happened near me. No blood at all. there is no blood on the coroplast wall either and it is white as well. Poor guy! He was holding his foot up last night but i bet it does hurt a bit. I will keep him on metacam for a few days........Crazy stuff.

Owie! One of my baby boys got the tip of his toe bitten off too. Not as much though! Other than pain control, I would just keep an eye on it. I hope he's feeling better soon!

Today he is walking on it at least. I didnt give him any metacam yet since he seems fine.

if i should start antibiotics just say it :)

I would watch it for a day or so and go from there. It is a bit swollen, but that is to be expected. Be brave mom, your son will be fine. :wink2:

I just prefer to catch them early than wait till later so I pay attention LOL

It is so gross looking...

Swelling and bruising peaks the second day after trauma, so it may get a bit more swollen tomorrow as it has only been 24 hours. Then it should go down from there. Because of the trauma, it is normal for it to be inflamed, swollen, and red. It is in a highly cleansable area, so he will be able to keep it clean himself. If the swelling travels up into his hand, then I would suspect an infection.
The shorter version: It looks OK to me!

I have a really hard time with looking at this. It make my skin crawl every single time lol
