So, Peter's neuter day is finally coming up tomorrow, and I just checked him and found a slight sniffle. He hasn't been sneezing, but there's a definite sniffle. Does this mean he shouldn't be neutered?

Also, how often is normal for rats to have URIs. I know they are common, but it seems like my rats get them a lot. They're in a big cage, on fleece and old clothes. They're in their own room. I make sure to keep up with cleaning so that the room doesn't smell bad. Neville had an infection pretty much all the time, Peter and Albus have had one (now two for Peter?) and Fred seems to have his third. I've only had them for a year.

Your vet will do a thorough check before doing the neuter. It's how good the lungs sound. My vet has done a few surgeries on rats with mild URI but their lungs must sound good enough.

It is very common in some rats. I've had rats live all their lives with never a sniffle while others would get URIs every few months.

Thanks!! I really shouldn't have bothered asking, I know. I think I was just looking for an excuse to cancel the surgery I've been dreading.

I think I was being crazy and imagining things. Just worrying about the neuter I guess, because I spent hours will him last night and a bit this morning and heard nothing! Peter is there now, neuter happening sometime today and I am so, so, so nervous.

Also, Fred went in today too about that third respiratory infection I mentioned, and a weird limp he's had for just under a week, and the dr thought it was what triggered the resp. symptoms (the limp preceded the resp. symptoms by just under a day). Little sweetie has something wrong with his spine. I'm hoping it's just him being accident prone again. I'm hoping he learns to be more careful in his old age.

^ Thank you!

And a big WHEW. I just got the call that everything went well. I couldn't pick up the phone when they called though :? , I had to let it go to voicemail. I did the same when my dog had surgery, it's just too scary!

I am so glad my first rat surgery is out of the way. I won't be surprised if there are more neuters in my future, and I'm sure I'll be nervous for them too, but less so!

I know that feeling sometimes i am ok if the tech calls because I know only the vets will call me if someone didnt make it. I have found with the difficult surgeries we go through my actual vet will call me to tell me about the surgery, but my heart drops the second i hear his voice. LOL I say " So no one died?" he giggles and says "No they are fine." LOL

I am glad it went well, i hate surgeries you would think about like 27 or 28 or more that we have done in the last two years, I would be used to it, but it never gets any easier.

Thanks guys. You make me feel less silly. None of my friends have pets, so they just think I'm crazy!
