Metacam dosage and compounding help.

Since I don't understand mg/kg I don't know how to dose Eddy. The Metacam is 1.5mg/ml and she weighs 325g. It's for possible chronic cystitis. My vet said 0.15 BID but I feel like that is high, and I don't want to overdose her.

If the Metacam doesn't help her condition, I am going to try Flagyl again. I will need help compounding the tablets.

The tablets are 250mg. After I crush it, would strawberry syrup be OK? If I mixed it in 5mls of syrup, that would make the concentration 50mg/ml right? And if she was dosed at 10mg/lb her dose would be 0.14? Or should she be dosed at a different dose?

Metacam is not an antibiotic its only for pain and inflammation and the dosage is perfectly fine.

Metacam is dosed at .5 to 2 mg/kg...your vet is dosing at .7 mg/kg so even on the low side of the range.

OK, thank you lilspaz. Have you experience chronic cystitis before? After two doses of Metacam, her pee is clear!

Yes, Doxy and Baytril. Which doesn't seem to be helping this or her breathing.

And her pee is red again. I wonder why it clears up then goes back.

Could she have growths in her urinary tract? Cysts or ?

You still might need to get a urinalysis and culture done to figure out which ab will work with this particular bacteria.

She got a urinalysis (I think) but a culture is nearly $200, and I do not have enough for one at all.

I would go for clavamox/baytril next then...good for UTI's and URI's in that combo :thumbup:

I actually have Clavamox in the fridge still, but it's a month old. Not good anymore I assume?

Amoxi should be good as well, maybe not as good as Clavamox but worth a try in my opinion.

So I don't know what to do here though. You saw my thread about them possibly having Sendai, so what do I do about Ed? Do I still try the Amoxicillin? And I spoke too soon I believe about the Metacam helping as even though it cleared up it is bloody again. I was planning to try the Flagyl after that, so what do I need to put her on?

She has been on so many different antibiotics in the past couple months.

Baytril, Orbax, Zithro, Doxy, Flagyl, and Clavamox. The Clavamox was for her urine, which didn't help so treatment with that ended and at that time I am not sure if it helped her breathing, or if it was the Baytril which doesn't help anymore.

Do I stop the Baytril+Doxy she is on now, and try Amoxicillin? I will be getting Flagyl to try again, can they be a combo? I can't imagine 4 at once is a good thing. This is all getting so confusing, and I feel now that I AM doing more harm than good. I feel like all of this medicating is dangerous. I wish she would be okay for me to stop all meds until I could afford a culture.

I ask a ton of questions and it seems only one or two get answered but I really need this one answered. Will a culture tell us surely what is wrong? Or even then can there be something missed or unknown?

can you do an itemized time line...

antibiotic(s) how long she was on - any improvements or not

etc...its hard to keep up with everyone's rats and your girl has been through a lot...but if we see it all in one post maybe it will make more sense.
