First off, sorry for making a million posts about this, I've never dealt with a mammary tumor before, so this is all new territory for me. My girl Sandy has a pretty large mammary tumor--and maybe I'm just a paranoid mommy, but it just looks so nasty to me. I tried to get pictures, but she wasn't having it tonight so I'll just explain in as much detail as possible. First I'll post the newest pic I have of her so you can see a size reference:

it might be a tad bit bigger then that now. I check her over every night- tonight I noticed that the skin over the tumor is quite pink, and there are a few tiny open sores, almost like pin pricks. These *could* be her nipples, but i'm not 100% sure. I also noticed that one of my younger girls plays with her rather rough, biting at her and just generally being rough (she's in her teenage years.. :gaah: ), so they could be tiny wounds from that as well. But could this be tearing of the skin from the size of the tumor? I'm not even sure if hers is considered HUGE, because I have nothing to really reference it to. I also noticed that there is a LARGE veign running right near the surface of the stretched skin over the tumor. I'm scared that that could rip and cause her to bleed a lot if she knicks herself on something or the little hyper brat  plays too rough with her. She seems pretty ok with her moods, as I've stated before she's always been a bit of a snob around people. I do have a critternation so I thought maybe if it would be better I could put the 2 younger girls on the bottom, and the 3 older ladies (2 of which are the tumor girls) on the top so they can catch a break from the crazy young ones? but I also hate to seperate them because they are all bonded pretty well. I guess the pink color of the tumor could be from it rubbing on the ground. Basically I want to do everything in my power to keep her as comfy as possible, but I also want to know when its time to say goodbye..and not let it go until it's too late and she's suffering. She still seems happy, but also really annoyed with that thing sometimes. So anyway...I'm rambling, any help or advice at this point would be appreciated...I love my girlies--and even though sandy is a snob..I still love the little brat

The size of the tumour in the pic is big but not that big. I've seen rats with tumours bigger than the rat. I wouldn't worry about the vein near the surface. I also wouldn't worry yet about the other younger ones causing cuts in her lump. Rats don't cut each other during play. If there's a cut, they mean business. If you are seeing scabs and small cuts on your rats, you should consider a mite treatment.
Your lumpy girl will tell you when she'll need you to intervene and help her be more comfortable. If you see her happy, eating and mobile then she's ok. If you see her go to a corner and zone out, then it's time to make her more comfortable.
