Hey guys -
I have been having problems with my oldest male, Jack, getting along with the other boys. He is always puffy when he sees them and has been biting and scratching them whenever they get together. I have had him living alone for about a month now, and when I take him out he is all about cuddling and being scratched and will groom me back when I am loving on him. My question is - how do I know when it's time to say that he is bound to be a solitary rat?
To me, he still seems like he misses and appreciates attention and cuddles, but when I put him back with the others he is the first to initiate fights and leaves some pretty intense battle scars. When do I know it's time to throw in the towel on intros?

No rat should ever be bound to be a solitary rat.
I would continue to try intros, try scary place intros, if it goes badly again, then you wait a week and try again.

Ok. I tried doing a scary place intro - in the tub with a little water in it - last night, and he was fine with my first two boys but as soon as I put in the third he went right for him. I don't know what it is, but there is something about my newest boy that he just can't get used to.

How about trying some alone one on one with the new boy? Do scary intro with just the two of them. See if how he reacts to just him and no other rats.
