Emma's abscess that we thought was gone after 2 months of no signs (it had recurred four times before) sprang up overnight, is huge and definitely uncomfortable for her, and I think is restricting her ability to eat just a bit.
Her abscesses had never bothered her prior to this, so when I came home last night and saw how miserable she was... we made an appointment to see Dr. Munn at her new clinic right away.
Maeby and Lucille had never been to the vet, so they came along for the ride
Overall we had a good visit. I was worried about Maeby and Lucille being stressed, but they took everything so well! They were climbing all over the examination table, the techs and Dr Munn, they even tried to climb up inside the sleeves of her lab coat! Dr Munn thought they were absolute joys, and said that Maeby and Lucille are fit and healthy as can be. Clear lungs, no lumps or bumps, and perfect weights at 300 and 290 grams, respectively.
Emma is a bit of a different story. She was so stressed by the trip, and I don't blame her So she had poryphorin all over her nose (which has not been an issue for her lately.. just trip stress) and Dr Munn got to see good examples of Emma's newest trick (as of a couple weeks ago).. coastal breathing Emma's abscess is also big, deep, and in a bad spot, on her neck right below her jaw on one side. Dr Munn thinks the coastal breathing is probably due to a lower chest infection... as Emma doesn't really sound congested and isn't sneezing... there also has been no signs of blue feet or other extremities, so it's probably not congestive heart failure.
Thank god, Maeby and Lucille will not be getting meds, and Emma is on a baytril/doxy course, to take care of the respiratory problems and hopefully shrink the abscess some. We will decide what to do about the abscess depending on if the abs help shrink it at all, and how she is after we knock the respiratory problems out of her. Dr Munn is reluctant to do anything surgically at this point, due to the location of the abscess and Emma's age, etc.
I also was able to pick up a small bag of Regal Rat to try.. the small bag cost $20 ( !!!!!) but if it goes over well I can look at ordering the larger bags online and freezing (or maybe splitting up with fellow ratters)
So, please send healing vibes to Emma, and wish us luck that the Regal Rat goes over well!
