Lunar was 2 years old in Nov.
He is a large sweet licky boy who absolutely loves people.
Lunar has a bad case of hed, can barely move his front legs, has a slight case of bumble foot, is often confused, and has now lost the ability to even lick soft foods.
I am giving him SQ fluids and syringe feeding him.
I wanted to start him on pred a couple of weeks ago but couldn't because of his bumble foot.

Despite all of this, Lunar is bright eyed, loving and enjoys being cuddled and patted.
We have a vet apt on Monday :sad3:

I would start him on the pred anyways, since it may shrink the tissue of the bumblefoot swelling, and may relieve some of those neuro symptoms. Poor Lunar. It sucks when they don't age gracefully. :(

I'll give it a try, can't hurt at this point.
Vet had told me not to because of the bumble foot but his bumble foot is better then it was.

Lunar was/is on antibiotics for an infection associated with his bumble foot.
The vet was afraid the pred might affect his immune system too much, allowing the bumble foot to get extremely bad and possibly life threatening.

Checked on Lunar to see how he was.
Lunar took more formula + baby cereal from the syringe but wasn't interested in his piece of boiled egg.
Lunar is being cuddled in my lap.
Noticed red in the corner of one of his eyes ... thought it was porphrin but it was blood.
Wiped it away and small amounts have cotinued to appear that I can't see but leave a smear on my finger.
Not sure if he is streching or having tiny seizers as everyonce in a while Lunar jerks a bit.
He just started bruxing ... so pain but then he is happy I offered formula and is eating it.
Just jerked sideways and cried.
Lunar looks better now ... wanted more formula.
but most of it ended up on the blanket.

I assume he may be in pain ....
so I should try to get him in to he emergency vet to be pts?
If he wasn't in pain, I would keep him here and hold him.
no more bruxing, not since I fed him.

Lunar's breathing sounds very very conjested, then it is fine for a short while and them very noisy again.
Why?

He is dying that's why. A rat who has never had any respiratory issues or a rat with PT will go through the same thing...as they pass.

I experienced the same thing with Taffy. Although she went through it a couple of times and then recovered before dying a month later...Don't know why though...
