Last night I had my babies out on a tabletop, and for the first time was observing them from eye level. Hooded baby's profile caught my attention since it looked a little odd, then alarm bells went off. She's got a pea sized lump on her throat. Its pretty solid feeling, but doesn't seem to be anchored to anything. I tried looking for a scab, but she was being for to wriggly for a more thorough examination.

I'm really hoping that its just an abscess, and that it'll go away with a combo of antibiotics and warm compresses. I'm planning on treating it as such over the next week and see if there's any difference in the lump's size. She's only eight weeks old. Aside from what I think was the "new home" snuffles, she seems perfectly healthy otherwise - she's eating like a champ, has tons of energy, and the lump isn't restricting her breathing.

In case the abscess treatment doesn't work, is there a possibility that the lump could be something else entirely? I know that tumors are possible there thanks to Ratty Momma's dear Ryder ...

SDA shows usually as lump in that region. It is a common spot for abscesses as wellI would watch to make sure no one else has a lump pop up or gets sick and in the mean time treat it as an abcsess.

Lump fortunately hasn't gotten any bigger. Going to go for another week with the meds.

Besides Orville (who's been sick long before the babies came), everyone else seems to be fine. Baby girl is the only one with the throat lump.

HALLELUJAH, it was an abscess after all!

Stubborn lump had me worried for a while since I didn't see any sort of improvement with compresses and meds. It finally started coming to a head earlier this week, and it must have popped right after I left for work today. Came home to find the lump gone, and its already scabbed over.

NOW I can finally start name brainstorming for my no-longer-new girls. I think I was holding back just in case the lump turned out to be something super bad.

That is good news, unless it's a tooth issue, then, not so good. If the abscess comes back after or you can't seem to treat it completely, strong antibiotics might be needed.
