My oldest girl Clair, also my fattest rat, has a swollen area down under, kinda near her tail, between her vulva and anus, basically

it's more swollen/larger on one side than the other, but both sides are swollen

any idea what this might be?

can they get tumors there?

I checked the other three girls and they're ok

I called the vet but she didn't call back and she won't be in til next Tuesday

in all other respects, she seems fine- eating ok, walking, er, well, waddling, around pretty much as usual

I'm not sure how long this swelling has been there but I did notice earlier this week that she seemed to be, er um, well kinda dragging her you know what a bit more than usual

as in she's so fat it looked like she was literally dragging her fat butt behind her

however one side is larger than the other- I tried to get a photo of it, but it didn't come out too good, I'll try again in awhile when she's up again

bizarre! totally freaked me out when I saw it

there's no odor, no blood, no pus, nothing to make you suspect an abscess or infection of any kind

I am so hoping it's just fat pads, but with one side being larger.... :(

this is all I have so far, she's sleeping right now so I don't want to disturb her

although.....! maybe I could get a better shot when she's half asleep I'll go try

these ones aren't much better, sorry but they do show how the swelling is bigger on one side,
from a distance it looks like she's got testicles (but only dangling, when you turn her over the swelling is on the belly side, not jutting out behind her tail like boy's torpedoes do lol)

it's a fairly mobile lump, however, cuz if she lays down she can manage to lay with the bigger swelling bulging off to one side, so it's not fixed in one place- I hope that's a good sign (I hope that means it's not a tumor)

poor girl, she's trying to figure out what's with the sudden interest in her private parts! :giggle:

I'd say a tumour. My sister's girl had that as well, it was a tumour, but I would have sworn it was a one sided testicle.
But... females that become very fat will also develop what appears to be testicles but it's just fat deposit.

that's what they are saying on GM too, but they are saying mammary gland tumor

would she have mammary gland tissue that far down near her anus and vagina and urethra?

damn I hope that's not what it is......... :sad3:

ah but she posted again- and it may not be as bad as I feared, she said she had a girl, Daisy with a tumor down there, and she lived for 8 more months!!

heck, I was thinking I'd be super lucky if Clair made it to her second birthday on Dec 30th. She still may not, but to know that there's some hope, that helps.

I don't want to be all sad around my girl while she's still able to snuggle and have fun, although for her, eating has always been her favorite activity :giggle:

she will literally eat with her eyes closed and fall out of bed if she smells food LOL

that girls lives to eat!!! I shouldn't talk, I'm not so thin myself

here's a baby picture of her while I try to find the one of her on my shoulder.
she's the one on the far right, that's Clair with two of her sisters. The girl next to her is Phaedra, platinum hooded girl, and I don't know who the other girl is, she was adopted with another sister and I got Clair, Phaedra and their mom Brynn, who I always called Mumma
They're just 3 weeks old in this photo that was taken in the foster home

I need to nominate that for RPOM haha.... totally cute....

Regarding the lump my girl Violet has the same thing at the moment, a small, hard, lump that looks like boy parts when she lies down. She's had it for 2 or 3 months now, hasn't grown too much and it hasn't bothered her at all. :)

There is always a chance that the tumour will grow quite slow, or even stop at some point. I've heard of lots of rats having another 8 months with a tumour.
The thing with mammary tumours, it usually doesn't invade the body, it growths outward only so it might become a hindrance at some point, it's definitely not life threatening until it's very very big and even then... it's probably not life threatening.
What you could do for now is put your girl on a strict diet. No fat and no sugar, as these will make the tumour grow faster.

@Petunia - I know your original post is very very old, but I have what sounds like the exact thing you had! Did you ever find out what the swollen rear was and do you remember how long your girl lived after you found it? My vet and I are scratching our heads as we don't know of the next step. I would love to know your experience if you remember. :D Thank you so much!
