Hi everyone! : ) So....my ratties are 3months old. I have had a litter box in their cage since I got them. They always poop in the litter box - yay! BUT they keep peeing EVERYWHERE. Even in their hammocks where they sleep. Another problem is when I give them their food, treats or toys, they grab them and run right into their litter box to chew on them. Any suggestion or explantations?? Thank you in advance!

Some rats will pee in the litter box but they're much more inclined to pee... everywhere. Sorry for your luck. LOL

Eating in the litter box is common too (as is food stashing)... they're just doing their ratty thing, so don't worry too much ;)

I've had some sucess by putting a brick in it. Even a half a brick in the litter box helps. I don't know why but rattys seem to like to pee on bricks and rocks.

Yup mine love their pee rocks. I don't enjoy cleaning them but that's okay ahaha.

Also, be glad that they are eating in the litter box ;) That means no lab block dust everywhere else. I tell you , block dust mixed with pee is really hard to get out of anything.

I always joke that my rats are all mixed up. They put the food in the litter and pee in their food bowl :giggle:

I've never heard of putting a rock/brick in the litter box, that's a good idea! Not only to get them to pee there but to make sure they don't dump their litter everywhere too ;P I'll have to try that! (I'm attempting again to litter train because the cost of bedding is ridiculous)
Good luck with your litter training as well! I don't think you'll ever get your girls to stop eating in their litter box (or storing their food) but if you can get them to not pee everywhere that'd be a plus. :p

It helps a bit, but they still pee everywhere, unfortunately. But it does help to keep the litter pan in one stop.

I think the fact that it would keep the litter pan secured would be a good enough reason for me, lol.
I don't care that they pee everywhere. The good thing though is that I noticed that my girl Penelope only pees in one corner so I tricked her and put the corner litter pan there and now she goes in the litter box. ;) Bahaha!!

Haha thats pretty sweet : D , my girls love to pee.. I think it's a hobby of their's ;)

LOL, I think it's every rats hobby. XD
Sadly the other two just go wherever, but pee is easier to clean up than poo mushed all over the place <_< :S

Haha , I'd rather pick up poop ; ) my girls like to be good and not mash them around

I put a brick in the litter boxes also, it helps with the sharp claws also. Mine people like to pee on it, I don't clean it I just change the litter and add back the brick.

Mine have recently begun emptying their litter tray and stuffing the litter elsewhere in their cage. However, they are still using the tray itself so I can't really complain.

They also move the tray around their cage (the other morning I woke up and it was on its side, balanced against the wheel, and they were climbing on it.) If it is still upright, they continue to use it, regardless of where they've put it, so again, I can't complain. It is just amusing to see what how they reorder their cage on occasion!

I had the problem of mine pooping, but not peeing in their litter box. When I first started they would pee on the shelf right above the littler box (so I guess they were sorta trying lol). I put a smaller box there and they would always pee in it after that. But I moved everything around now, so their kinda back to peeing on shelves again. I never understood how they can be so clean, yet sleep in their pee too. :?
