Okay so some scarey stuff went down today. I am on vacation miles away from home and my friend is takign care of the rats. As you may or may not know, one of my oldests, La Jolla, has soem bad pnemonia and is on a whole host of meds. Going away I figured that would be the extent of the drama. Well Wednsday, my pet sitter texted me in a panic saying La Jolla's toe was bleeding. She also came into chat. Of course we all just told her to use soem flour or corn starch and stop the bleedign then jsut keep an eye, but it was ' no big deal' and toe injuries are usually just bad looking.
Well today, Whiel on a tour bus to the Grand Canyon, I got a few more paniced texts, La Jolla was bleeding again and would not stop with flour. So I told her to grab the silver nitrate sticks and cauterize it, that would do the trick. But sicne she couldnt find them she took her to a local vet. Turns out that vet 'doesnt take rats' ( Even thoguh we have taken them there before). By this time she said the bleedign was done, adn jsut a bit when seh moved. I told her not to worry about it, but she had already made an appointmnet. Then I heard nothing until " I am going to the vet now" Honestly I was jsut expectign a text back saying " Vet cauterized it all is good."
Guess you never get what you expect. After nor hearing anything for a while, I fidn a voice mail from my vet.
" I know you are in the Grand Canyon, and your wonderful pet sitter is here. What was thoguht to be a small toe injury si acctually more serious. She seems to have dislocated her toe and now a blood vessel is bleeding. She will need minor surgery to fiw it. We need to remove the top part of the toe, she wont miss it. The only problem iis that with her age and her lung problems, there is a very high chance she wont pull through the anesthesia. Call me back I would liek to chat abotu this with you"
I was shocked! A simple toy injuryh , No big deal, was now puttign ym girls life into jeapordy. I am so glad that my friend decided to take her in, otherwise she would have bled out at home.
My mom called the vet back adn talked it over, while I sat in shock next to her. She talked to my friend too, she was really upset as I can imagine. By this time I was jsut thinkgin that I would never see her again. I started crying infact. It was terrible.
So I sat there for a good half hour holdign my breath until I finally got a text sayign she was alright adn wakign up well. I was so relieved.
They only lightly sedated her, enoguh to put in the local so she coudlnt feel. then they removed the top part of her toe and cauterized it.
So now equipped with a bunch of bandages, a tiny rat sized head cone and less a toe, seh si recovering in the tiny cage.
I will get photos and such when I am home on Monday night til then I am in the dark about that kinda thing. I am jsut so releived she pulled through.
I have never heard of this happenign before I was not prepared at all! Has anyone else heard of a toe being amputated like this? I know I hav eheard of whole legs, but not toes.
So I guess, toe injuries arent always ' no big deal' huh?
