Well, my friend has recently bought two rats from a pet store (I tried to convince her to look at adopting/rescuing, but she fell in love with this dumbo and a cream/mix at the store when we were getting supplies) Now, even after the store told her they couldn't guarantee the sex (apparently training the people who separate them isn't mandatory there :redhot: ) she still bought them. I am basically 100% positive one is female and about 90% positive the other is male, when both were suppose to be females...I'll be posting pics on here and Facebook to get some confirmation though as it's been a while since I've had rats so young they needed to be sexed - or from somewhere that couldn't do it properly! :gaah:

Anywho, lets just say one is male and one is female for now. Obviously, we don't want to have them kept separate and sadly there's not enough room right now to have two cages permanently in their place to get one of each sex for friends. So, I was wondering if anyone knows any good, and decently priced, vets in the Kingston area who could do a neuter. Normally, I'd suggest a spay instead but money is the issue at this moment and we'd like to look into it ASAP. I do have some decent cages at my parent's so she can temporarily separate them if I am right though.

Thanks!

Sexing is really easy, even very young. You should ask her if one has testicles, that should clear it up pretty quick! lol Make sure she keeps them separate until she decides what to do. Maybe she could bring one back to the store and switch for the other sex?

I hope you do not have them together now, if your not sure both are the same sex?

It's pretty easy to tell!

I've sexed rats before...I'm living in the house with her and he hasn't dropped yet and it looks like he has a larger space but I prefer to have some extra confirmation. I'm more worried about wondering about the vet. but thanks for your input.

this sound so familiar ..if this turns out to be a male and female pair! hopefully she's able to neuter ASAP!

What exactly is sounding familar to you Renee? These aren't my rats and I'm simply trying to get information for her. The most likely course she'll take is seeing if the store will let her swap for a male with the female or rehome her and there's a woman with some baby males on kijiji we'll go look at.

How old are they? (just wondering about possible pregnancy)

What about swapping rats with her...don't you also have a male and a female?

I'd say maybe 4 weeks at most, but I'm not good at aging, boy hasn't dropped yet if it is a he. I'm in Kingston, and I found new homes for my babies since things weren't working out money wise, hence why I'm in Kingston for a couple months.

Maybe you should upload some pictures if your not good at sexing or telling age? the sooner the better!

nvm I just seen them on FB ..you really should not have them in the same cage if your unsure about sex and age! thats just a stupid accident waiting to happen.

Am I missing something? I didn't think these were even Asheka's rats but her friend's.

Going to try and get some belly shots tomorrow. If I would've known this was a possibility I'd have brought a second cage, but all my cages are at my parent's and we're heading there this weekend so will be grabbing another until we sort it out. Don't have the gas money to get there earlier unfortunately. I'm a bit mad this is happening, but I tried to warn her...

If they're very small you can try keeping them in a large, clear plastic tote if you have one. You should contact Adrienne, she used to run a small animal rescue in Kingston and may know of a good vet in the area.

Oh yes, I think there's a couple really big ones kicking around here from their move. I'll have to go searching with her, got a huge bag of carefresh and fleece left, so it'll help for sure...I don't know why I forgot that option. Adrienne? I'll look for her! Is that her username though? lol Thank you!

That's her user name. Good luck! (If you can post pics, maybe you can get some opinions of age/sex.)

Awesome, thanks! Yea, we've been doing some running around today and just getting to supper now so will be taking some belly sots tonight to confirm. I really friggen hope I'm wrong though....
