Are your rats being very itchy?
It might be worth going to your vet and seeing if you can get Revolution for your rats. It's very effective and an easy one time application.

i'd go with revolution like Jorats said.

it's much easier to apply and works wonderfully :)

your vet could also get you the dosages for it. I usually use kitten formula and it's a very small amount on the back of the neck!

Question for those with experience: How do rats get lice?

Can you only get lice if you bring them home already with lice? Or can they get it later on if they are currently lice-free?
Just wondering if this is something I need to worry about, since I see many posts regarding this problem. Thanks.

I read that they can get lice from the litter bag directly. You have to desinfect their whole cage with tea tree oil shampoo, put the litter you're gonna use in a large "Ziploc" kind of bag, freeze it for few hours to make sure all the lice are dead then let it warm at room temp. before you put it in the cage.

Mine had their lice when I got them from the pet store, and at that time, I didn't know that the tiny white specs were the pouches containing their eggs, their was like hundreds of them! They looked like dandruff to me!!! The only difference is they don't come off, they're like glued to each single rat's hair!!!

Lice are species specific - so Rat lice are just Rat lice. If you go to a pet store, or to visit a rescue, or a friend's rats, then you need to wash well before handling your rats. If you get new rats... particularly from whereever you got these, since they seem to have an infestation, you have to treat them while in QT(before they come into contact) or else you will have to treat your whole colony. As far as I know, lice cannot live on your pets asymptotically, so once you treat and they're gone, you're not going to have a flare up unless they get reinfected from an outside source.
