So unfortionatly all of my rats have aquired lice  and I've been fighting it off some time (going to the vets and such) but they dont give me revolution or anything.. just want me to keep going back for shots. I know that Ivermectin CAN maybe work depending but my poor boys are going crazy I have to try it!! Now questions:

Its the Horse Ivermection? I know theres a sheep one too? Are their different kinds and is there one I should be looking for, I hope it will be in our M&R Feeds store here(pray)
Is this drug okay to give to elderly rats? I have 1 boy over 2 years who has started to get lice.

AND does anyone know if this drug is okay to give with Amoxcillion? One of my boys is on it, if no one knows then I will NOT take the chance and just keep up with the cleaning more.

Thank you!

UPDATE-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I tryed to find a brand that was said on the rat care guide but didnt see one that matched... does anyone know the brand Eqvalan Gold.. it said you can use Equalvan but thats not exactly the same name...

The Ivermection is at 1.55% which is a bit lower then 1.87% which it recommened though. and the only other ingredient is praziquantel, is this ingredient okay for rats too? its at 7.75%...which sounds like a lot though..???? Im too scared to give it to my rats before knowing if that second chemical is okay?

It must be different there but horse and sheep is not what I use, I use the small pets one.... rabbit/guinea pig/bird version.
Is that not available there?

not sure... I've just heard from sources you can use the horse one because its gentle... where to you get the small animal one?

I've used Ivermectin in the past and it worked quite well. It's a bit of a pain in the butt compared to revolution but it will work. I think most people recommend the horse paste because a) it's easy to find and b) you can get it in apple flavour which makes it more palatable to your rats. (I've never seen it for sheep or small pets.) You can buy it at any store that sells farm supplies - like the Co-Op, TSC, etc. It costs about $18 for a tube.

Anyway, you need to squeeze a good blob out of the tube and mix it really well. Then you give your rats an amount equal in size to a grain of rice. When I did it I put each "grain" inside a cooked noodle. It makes it easy to portion out and since rats love pasta you know they will eat the full dose. Securely close your tube of paste and store it in the fridge till your next use.

Do this once a week for 3 weeks. Make sure you thoroughly clean your cages and wash all the hammocks, fabric and toys. You also will need to freeze your remaining litter or throw it out and buy new - because the litter is your most likely source of infection.

If you want to go one step further you could also treat your carpets and furniture. I use a product called Zodiac - it's very effective against mites, lice, fleas, etc.

Good luck!

I always got my Ivermectin from my vet. All I know is that it's clear.

Problem is that a vet will charge you an office visit ($55 for me) plus will insist on a "skin scraping" ($20) which is useless because the results are almost always wrong. Then they tack a "dispensing fee" ($10) on to the product that has a 400% markup. So for most of us getting ivermectin at the vet is going to cost close to $100 (per rat) plus the time and gas you used to get there. And your rats are not going to be any better off for it.

My vet was going to charge me close to $2,000 to treat my 40+ rats for mites.
Apparently she thought I was rich and really, really stupid. :lol7:
