Yop, another intro issue... but I so would love to succeed with this one once and for all!

I currently have two neutered males that just cannot stand one another. Since my Mac moved in last June, I have been trying to intro them everytime I got newbies home, but it never worked, they always act aggressive when they just even smell one another (even if the other is not physically present)

A few weeks ago, I have adopted two girls and started another set of intros last week. So far, intros had been about 30 minutes, in neutral, then not so neutral grounds, and now, everybody is on the play area (my couch). Yesterday, intro lasted two hours, the boys puffed up and tried and rub against one another, but my Mac is getting less and less vocal, which I believe is a good thing. I usually would intervene whenever they get close to one another, but yesterday, I decided to pretend not to see them and only dropped in when backs where high up or when Mac was getting vocal, as this sets Pollux off.

You need to know that Mac has been a lone rat until he moved in with us. He is now around 25 months old, is either getting HED or arthritis, and has an abcess on his abdomen that is currently being treated, so he is vulnerable. Pollux had a history of being aggressive up until I adopted him and had him neutered (he had actually cut his brother's abdomen open during a fight), and he is my biggest rat by far (currently about 720 g). He's a sweetheart with his humans, but he is VERY territorial with other rats. Previous encounters between the two have resulted in blood being drawn - Mac's and my own.

My question - This weekend, I was planning in moving everyone into the Double CN: Mac and his current cagemates on the top as they currently occupy the whole space, and Pollux and the new girls on the bottom. They had shared the CN before I "retired" Picolo (RIP) and moved Pollux in with him, and Mac and Pollux were spending most of their time in a corner, sniffing and acting aggressive towards one another (Mac was in the bottom, standing on a house and smelling up, Pollux on top, smelling down at Mac and dancing that frustrated aggressive little dance). After they all move in, I am planning on continuing intros by having everyone together at play time, in hopes that Mac and Pollux will finally give up and start getting along. If moving Pollux back in the CN triggers their little game again, will that compromise any future chance of intros?

Those two are my intro nightmare!!!

That little game they play is completely normal and should not deter you from doing intros. How rats act behind bars is not necessarily how they will act face to face. In fact, having them live so close to each other is a good thing. You want them to smell each other and know that the other guy is there for good.
So far your plan is good. Keep at it!

At least almost!

I never thought I would be posting this, to be honest, but my guys overcame their fear/dislike and now accept living in the same quarters. Getting old and wise and sick does have its upturns, after all!

As mentionned in my first post, I moved everyone in a divided CN 2 weeks ago, and continued giving common out time to all. Since my guys were actually accepting of one another, I decided to wait another week and then try to open up the cage. Then... I brought all six of my crew to the vet last Friday, as I was suspecting respiratory issues - and the receptionist, who is in LOVE with Pollux (says he's as big as her chihuaha) saw lice on him that both me and the vet missed. Sooo.... on Sunday (Saturday was a crazy busy day), a week early, I got everyone out, the BF and I scrubbed the CN and washed all accessories with javel, I baked the wooden toys I didn't want to throw away, put the new liners from Momrat, new hammocks from Momrat and Kanuck, treated everyone with Revolution, and put everybody in an open double CN... and they are still there! Of course, it was harder for the boys at first, but my Pollux just amazed me with his patience and diplomacy. So to celebrate our success, here's a picture of my crew having breakfast! (please note Mac and Pollux are eating side by side :joy: )

And now, the cream on the sunday... the picture I thought I would never be able to capture

I now have issues with my girls - but that will be another post.

Actually, as much as I believe the age factor and the slight RI helped, I have a feeling that my attitude weighted a lot as well. I was not nervous when doing the actual intros - actually, I started thinking One more try - if it works great! if not... at least I tried again.

So basically, I ignored the squabbles and intervened only when I could see sparkles of static electricity in my boys fur...
