I keep a stock of 10% Enrofloxacin in the house from previous rodent keeping, and now, I'm very grateful- I just got two rats, two bouncy boys about 7 or 8 weeks old, and they're a little sick.
I got them Friday afternoon and they immediately had quick and clean sounding sneezes, but I figured/hoped it was "new home allergies" and simply watched carefully. Saturday brought more sneezes, still with no other ill signs. Bright eyes, no porphyrin, and no gurgles or phlegmy clicks when I hold them up to my ear. By the time Sunday morning had come, one of them had started making a noise not unlike this, but quieter- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvtjiRx0 ... re=related and so I gave them some dark chocolate, went out and bought a scale, and started them on antibiotics. At 230 and 235 grams, I've been giving them 0.015 mL orally twice a day so far, with plans to reweigh/increase dose every few days as they grow.
Sunday afternoon held more "hurhk" noises and some sneezing, and Sunday night was pretty quiet. Monday morning I'm thankfully hearing nothing! Monday night is here, and still nothing. With this information, how long should I keep the course going? If they were mice, I'd give them two weeks, but I hear rats tend to take longer.
