Angel my 27 month old Bronling, has developed malocclusion recently.
She went from this

to this after her trim at the Vets

I have had her trimmed once more since then and I went to look at her teeth today (JennW was over and we were comparing teeth with her boy), and realized there's something else going on too...

It looks like a thin white tooth that goes up into her gumline. Her other top teeth look the same as before so its not the tooth that has split.

Has anyone seen this before?

You found Toofer's missing tooth ! :laugh4:

Just kidding, her missing tooth is on the bottom
... no idea what is going on ... are you sure it didn't split below the gum line?

Poor little girl ...

btw, her teeth look wonderful after a trim by your vet.

I've never seen that before. Quite strange, like she now has three top incisors. Have you tried cutting the third tooth right to the gum line?

Kaia on Goose said she had seen something like this before. The tooth bud gets injured, splits and grows another tooth...that makes sense.

Can't wait to see what Dr Munn makes of this on Tuesday. :cheeky:

It also looks like we will be doing our $50 trims every 2-2.5 weeks...sigh :sad3:

That scares me. I've never had to deal with tooth problems (knock wood and thank heavens caring fates give those kids to you not me - I can't even cut toenails on a healthy kid with my eyesight).... It's unhealthy from the word go isn't it as it's so white? I'd be worried that it would further mess up the healthy eating setup and maybe even file the good bottom ones where it shouldn't and cause problems with them.. Maybe it ought to be taken out?
I'm so sorry for your little Angel. Theres not much any of us like less than going to the dentist. Unless it's having to go the the vet.
I don't think that tooth should be there. Lotta help I am but :gaah: I hope this doesn't cause you or Angel more trouble or cost.

You're so good at handling your ratties, are you sure you can't get Dr. Munn to show you how to do it?
I have a pair of tiny side cutters that I used to use on one of my rats, they worked really well!
I just wish I could find them now so I can give them to you!

Oh I wish!!! But to give you an idea on her own feelings...SHE won't trim teeth without anesthesia and a client walked out when she said that. Can you imagine her giving me the okay to trim at home, without anesthesia?

She did mention that if the trimmings become more frequent then she would try to reduce my cost for me. Lets find out on Tuesday :p

I use a small pair of finger nail clippers to trim Toofer's front teeth
.... and her 5 month old nephew Paul seems to have inherited the problem as I had to trim one of his front teeth yesterday.
I am so happy when I am able to get the vet to do it instead, but that is a rare occurance because of the cost.

The high cost must be for the anesthesia. My vet trims for $22 but even then, I do it myself. I bought small cat nail clippers and it works really well, although, I'm not alone, my youngest son Mat is so gentle when holding the rat, it goes so smoothly.

Ya I would also say that with your rat experience you should be able to handle this task just fine! If I can do it you can do it!!!! LOL

I use human finger nail clippers and have never had any issues. However, it is not a one person job. You will need to have someone there to help hold the rattie I am sure. I know I couldn't do it without Ryan holding the rat.

I read somewhere that the rats do not have any nerves in the teeth and it is just like cutting your finger nails. So there is no risk of hurting the rat so I am not sure why your vet puts the rat under? Just for the convenience of the rat not moving maybe?

Ohmigod I can hardly look at those pics.

I don't care how much it would cost, there's no way I could do that at home on my own. My vet can take $100 bucks from me a month, no problem, if it's for that sort of thing.

Quick update...

Angel's 3rd incisor has thickened and is the width of a regular tooth now, they all grow curved to the side, and I just took this pic now. Amazingly she was happily chewing on a lab block last night. Her next trim is on Saturday at 9:30 am.

I can look at tumor removal pics, abscess pics... whatever.

That I can't look at. Uggggh.

I hope the week goes quickly and Saturday comes fast!

So Dr Munn thinks that the damaged toothbud is likely the "root" of all our issues. LOL

All fixed for another 2-2.5 weeks. Angel was NOT going to let me take a nice pic of her upper teeth but I tried...

Dr. Munn told me her jaw is malformed, but her condition other than that is wonderful! When she first went in (and she has been like this for ages, pre-teeth problems), she had a rough moth-eaten coat, and was too thin...now she's filled out, her coat is softer and whiter...I attribute it to Breakfast of baby cereal every morning. My vet told me Good Job!

Sadly now her sister isn't well, and we are suspicious of masses in her lungs since she feels "full" just below them. :(

But Angel looks fabulous!
