I didn't realize... HOW MUCH THEY LOVE TISSUES!

So I keep hearing about how much rats love tissues/ tissue boxes/ pulling tissues out of boxes, but I kept thinking 'Naw, that can't be right. Rats are intelligent animals that need complex mental stimulation.' That was until I put a tissue box in their cage. Henny came over, sniffed it, and halfheartedly pulled at a tissue. Then she walked away to go sleep in her shoebox. I was a little disheartened they weren't as excited about it as I though they would be... until Penny saw the tissue box. She dashed over, and after a quick inspection of the tissues, began to pull every single tissue out of the box and sprint around the cage with the tissue in her mouth. After about five minutes of this, the inside of the cage looked blanketed in snow. :laugh4: She also used the tissues that she had strewn about to line she and Henny's shoebox nest. It also appears she seems to have learned the word "tissue." Now, I can walk into the room and squeal "tissue!" and Penny begins to popcorn all over the cage, quite literally bouncing off the walls in her excitement. Rats never fail to amuse me, their antics surprise me. :D

I think what is more fun to watch than tissues is a roll of toilet paper. I hang one up in their cage and they will grab the end and keep on pulling. I have one girl that will keep pulling and stuffing it everywhere until the entire roll is emptied. Just cracks me up to watch this. :cheeky:

They are soooooooooooooooo much fun to watch! :laugh4: I do believe they understand words too and mine have learned quite a few... They even hold out for certain treats - those little sugar boogers!!! :emb: I am going to have to try the kleenex/toilet paper and see what happens. I know a girl at work that has 2 of Curley's other sons was not too happy when she left a roll of paper towels too close to the cage!! :laugh4: :giggle:

Oh gosh! :laugh4: I'll have to try the TP and see how they react...

I need to give mine a tissue box too. I already do the tp but it's time for something new. Must have been so much fun to watch.

I awoke this morning to the lovely sound of tissues being shredded by my little tissue spaz, Penny. There were scraps of tissue EVERYWHERE. I just laughed. She looked so comical with all of the shredded tissue fluff stuck to her head. :laugh4:

Oh that is TOO cute to imagine! My kids love tp and tissues and anything paper. I need to get them a few tissue boxes though. I've never looked for them at the dollar store, but will next time I go.

I would love it if you guys shared videos of these silly antics. Though I do have 10 silly goobers to watch, watching rats never gets old. The amount of laughter is outrageous- I never knew I could laugh so much.

I laughed so hard the other day when I gave them their 1st hard boiled egg!! I think they got mad at me cause they went and hid until I left....

I so agree with you about watching the rats. Who needs T.V. when you can sit and watch the rats. I get so many good laughs by just watching all of their antics.

That roll of tp still sits in the cage - nothing! I have even hung it up - nothing!

It took a while for mine to figure it out too. Did you hang it up on a chain so they can just grab a piece and unravel?

I ill have to try a box of tissue....I find the girls really love this kind of stuff. My boys are all about their tummy's so they love things/games that involve food.
