My little man has a little bit of a myco flareup. He's probably between 5-6 weeks old. Just seeing if that's too young to give baytril.

I would use baytril on a young'un since its not proven on the effects of young rats (just puppies and assumed it would have the same issues with rats). IF it means untreated or baytril, def. baytril :)
If you can get your hands on some zithro it is pediatric friendly.

Goliath was on baytril and dexamethasone at 4 weeks of age. He did just fine.

Do you know how much to use? He's an average size wee man. I know I give my big guy .3 and my girls .15 so maybe .05?

It's 150mg/kg or lb....He's small, very small. Average 6 week boy. Light little fellow....A little embarassed here, but I have no idea how much he might weigh. Maybe 1/4 of a pound?

Wow, just called the vet that I last used (got the script from) in this city....They're (words can't describe) :redhot: . She wouldn't give me any information about the dosage because I haven't brought this rat in. I have brought, oh, like 10 other ones in. Geeze. Not going there ever again.

I told her that I'd been in to see the vet with many of my other guys and have had rats for years and know what's wrong with this little guy. All I wanted to know if it was /kg or /lb. Beep, Beep, Beep. I'm swearing at her  (not the vet, but the receptionist). My other vet (the good one) had given my last perscription at 50mg and that's what he uses.

150 gram baby at 50 mg/ml...i assume its premade not pills?
at low end dose of 5 mg//kg he would get .02 cc's,
at high end dose at 10 mg/kg (preferred) he would get .03 cc's

As an aside, the receptionist may have thought she was covering their *****. Lots of vets have gotten in trouble for telling people to use medications, giving instructions, diagnosing over the phone, etc.. It's actually against the law now. Every person who calls in like that could be a potential lawsuit for them killing their pet. While you're not the type, other people are. I really don't like it, because of situations like this, but some vets are just clueless on who to trust and who to not trust.

If you keep notes of what concentration of medications you have on hand, you can always refer back to it in order to get an accurate dosage. RatGuide posts the recommended dosages, so all you need to do is have the weight of the rat and the concentration of your medications.

Yep, same with me... the receptionists can't give us any information over the phone. It's frustrating but the laws are very strict in Canada with vets.
In fact, it's illegal for us to give any medical information like we do here in a forum. :redhot:

Well, he's doing much better now. I gave him .02cc. No more sniffily sneezing. How long should I give it to him? I know usual is 10 days, but he's doing much better now. Haven't heard one sneeze or anything from him over the weekend. No sounds in his lungs.

The usual is 14 days. Any antibiotic given for less than 14 days has the chance of becoming resistant to the medication. I would be especially concerned with that idea since he is so young. The more/longer they're on medications through their lives, the more tolerance their body builds to the medications. Since he's starting so young, you don't want him to just come down with it again in a week and have to put him back on. My usual treatment is one week beyond the end of all symptoms. This usually works out to being 14 days - but sometimes not.

I would continue with the Baytril for the 14 days.
