Logan has been on baytril since saturday night, for a mild respiratory infections. His only noticeable symptoms have been sneezing fits and cleaning his face a lot not eye or nose discharge and no wheezing noises. It seems to be a bit better but he is definitely still sneezing more then normal. My vet only gave me a 7 day supply, because she said if it isn't working then we would try something else or a combination of antibiotics. Am I expecting results too fast? When should I start to see improvement?

Thanks
Jamie

Yeah I just got Logan on Saturday an I immediately took him to the vets because he was sneezing alot in his original home a well as his crate. Today he has been on antibiotics for 4 days and his sneezing seems to be getting better and less frequent. He was kept in an aquarium and on shaving so I am wondering if he might have damage from that. The girl who had him said he has always been really sneezing and the person she got him from said he would grow out of it!

I will definitely keep him on it til he is finished and then if he is still showing symptoms the vet said we might try another antibiotic. If the Baytril is working then I am going to suggest keeping him on it for atleast another week if not two.

I had him out for 45 mintues this motning while I cleaned his cage and gave him is meds, and I didn't hear any sneezing or see any obsessive face cleaning :joy: So I think the Baytril is taking effect. He is still eating lots and drinking too.

I have enough to last the weekend, as I am going away for my 1 year anniversary and my friend is going to take Logan and give him his meds. She has had rats before, and I trust her 100% to take care of my baby. Her daughters are 5 and 3 and so excited to babysit Logan. I just hope they don't fall in love with him too much, he is so calm and loves to cuddle. I know they will have him out a lot over the weekend.

The vet clinic I use is open 24 hrs 7 days a week, so I will call Sunday to get at least another weeks worth of Baytril, before I schedule him for a neuter.

So I went away for the weekend to celebrate my 1 year wedding anniversary, and I left Logan with my friend. She gave him lots of out time and continued giving him his antibiotics, but he is still having sneezing fits. Today is his 8th day on Baytril. I made an appointment for Tuesday to take him in for another check up. It is the same clinic, but a different doctor who has lots of experience with rats. Hopefully he can give us something that works. I just hope he gets better soon, so that he can get neutered soon. Poor guy has to be by himself until then, plus I don't want whatever he has to pass to Norman or Fiona.

Thankfully he doesn't seem to be getting any worse thou.

Logan is definitely still not 100%. We go tomorrow at 3:40 for our vet appointment. I am going to ask about putting him on doxy or zithromax along with the baytril.

On a good note, Logan is the sweetest most cuddliest guy ever. He is currently bruxing and boggling like crazy inside of my sweater. He is the first rat I have even seen boggle! So cute

How do you travel by plane with a children antibiotic that requires refrigeration? I need to travel with a liquid antibiotic that requires refrigeration. I don't want to put it in my checked bag because the airport I'm flying to is famous for loosing luggage. I was thingking of an icepack but I know when a friend tried to take home a lunch box with a blue ice pack that was in the original package she was forced to throw away the ice packs or leave the lunch boxes behind.

That's something you should call the airline and ask about. Depending on the antibiotic, you can also ask your pharmacist about compounding it to keep outside of the fridge or dispensing it un-mixed so you can mix it once you have access to a fridge.
