Hi all-

my rat Lenny has been to the vet twice. They put him on .1 cc Doxicycline twice a day and .3 cc Endo. but he's still wheezing. I'm doing everything I can to keep him comfortable. He started eating on his own again but I have a feeling he might not make it this time :( He's been sick for a week now. He seems a lot weaker. What do you think? Thank you!

we can double check his dosages if you like? Can you tell us what the mg/ml is on both the doxy and the enrofloxacin/baytril bottle is?

Take a look at the first post on that thread. Is he wheezy or actually gasping for air?

You should follow the directions for steaming and give him ensure. It can take over a week for them to heal up. Their lungs have to repair from the sickness.

Mally is a wheezer, it is worse when her cage is even remotely dirty, put him on fleece and towels and change it often. Use a humidifier in the room that will help if it is from the dry air.

I think i have the videos from the first day to day six where she was still battling.. Right now she is rotten as ever.

Got the fleece and a baby humidifier. He's more wheezy. Every now and then he gasps for air. The humidifier helps some.
Thank you! the videos and post is very helpful. Our vet recommended pedialyte is ensure better?

ensure has all the nutrients that he will need to help get him through this, pedialyte is only to keep him hydrated.

As of last vet visit, he's very underweight I'd have to double check on his weight.

Edit: I looked at his last visit was around 400g maybe a little less. He has gained a tiny bit or at least it looks that way.

thanks again for your help!!

Hi, I'm going to give my true opinion here, sorry to say. Being that just 36.5 hours ago I had to take Meesha in to be euthanased. We'd been battling a resp infection for 12 months. On Thurs morning she was still 'ok' I must have been looking through rose-coloured glasses though, then on Thurs, night she was bad, struggling for breath, not too interersted in ensure or food. Friday morning was awful and I delayed going to work because I called the vet as soon as they were open and basically demanded to have the first appointment as she was struggling so badly. I will never forgive myself and from this day on, I would rather let them go a little bit early (because in my heart I know their time is up, so why delay too much) than let them go too late. But until you see it for yourself, it's so impossibly hard to make that decision. But that is just my personal opinion, hope it doesn't grate with anyone. But from now on I am an avid believer of no pain or suffering. I thought I was before but this last experience has re-set my levels. All I can see in my head now is Meeshy struggling for breath.

Edit: Meesha also lost a lot of weight and that should have been a sign for me to sort things out.

Hi

Thank you for your opinion I do appreciate it. I'm so sorry to hear about Meesha. I was thinking about this too. The last thing in the world I want is for Lenny to be suffering, so if it is that bad, I would do what you did.
He does have a follow up appt in a few days. Today, he's doing better but if he gets worse, like I said, I don't want him to struggle.
