I noticed the the back end/rump on my girl Paige looked a bit different and I managed to scoop her up for a few seconds  she's a very squirmy girl who would much rather run around then be held

anyway I didn't really get a good look, she wouldn't hold still but I did notice that her lower back felt HOT (not quite as far down as her tail, just a bit further up, you know?)

it looks a bit pinkish in that area too and her fur is messed up, like it's wet but it's not.

what would cause a rat to have a hot spot like that? She is not scratching at it, at least not when I"m around. None of the other girls are itchy and there's no sign of any mites or lice (no one has scabs, etc)
although I've never seen lice, but if she had them wouldn't she be very itchy? and where would she get them?

I am going to try to get her to hold still so I can get a better look...........
wish me luck ok?

would bathing her help?
could she have something like an allergic dermatitis?

is this something she has to see a vet for, or are there things I can try first to see if it resolves without taking her?
(she's fast and very difficult to take from one room to another, so taking her on the bus will be interesting to say the least lol)
Of course I"ll take her in if she really needs to go.

any ideas?

UPDATE:
HERE"s some photos I took tonight, her rump isn't hot any more. Maybe she's just got a different color in that area- you can see how her fur kinda parts in the middle...?
also she's got some pink coloring on the side of her face

My girl Tessa had some pink on her in different spots, she was PEW also. People kept telling me that it had to be porphryin but it wasn't and it could not be washed off. Paige's spot is the same way, it's part of her coloring, it's not anything that got on her.

Paige was a rescued pregnant feeder rat. Does that pink discoloration (or coloring) on these girls mean that they've got some other color in their background,
or is it just something that some PEWs have?

her daughter Evie is all white.

She's older right? She could've been grooming her fur or not grooming her fur since its one you really have to strettttcch for, and sometimes oldies give up on body parts they cannot reach easily.

Paige is only about 7mos old.

all my oldies are gone on ahead :(

An abscess can also be hot, like a localized fever. Could it be that an abscess is coming to a head?

I think it's too large an area to be an abscess

I am wondering if it might be because they had some nuts they don't usually have, and some egg too (more protein/fat than usual) ?

well that spot isnt' hot any more, whew!
I got some photos of her that added to the first post with an update and a question about her pink spot(s)

That pink on the last pic, that's got to be porhyrin, I had a few pews and they all got that at one time or another and I never was able to wash it off.
I don't see anything in the first pic.

OK I'm still confused...why would she have porphryin (Sp?) that can't be washed off?

it actually stained her fur? and if so, why doesn't it stain every rats' fur?

oh in the first photo, it's just to show the area that was hot before- it's where her fur kinda parts in the middle. none of my other rats have their fur like that-----it's almost like her fur is a bit longer there??
sorry my vision is very bad and I'm not always sure what I am seeing. :/

Oh ok, well, if it's seem ok now, at least there's that.
I don't know why but in some rats especially pews it seems to stay on them for a long time especially if there was a lot of porphyrin. Porphyin can even burn the area, in some rats, they lose the fur around the eyes.

I also find with my white rats (PEWs and a capped girl) the porph they was off their face ends up getting brushed down the body (to the neck, shoulders, ribs, back) and stains the tip of the fur. With most rats it's sporadic but others it's more constant.

oh ok!

I thought porphyrin was really just rat "tears" er, I mean, I thought it wasn't a completely bad thing to have...but it can burn their skin? wow

I gotta go do some more reading and refresh my memory about this stuff.
My older girls had bits of porphyrin around their eyes in the morning and I just thought it was like when we get that "sand" in our eyes in the morning....you know? morning eyes...?

Well Paige is a very intense rat. She was bred to be a feeder, so not the best genes in the world but such a character! She seems a bit high strung, a lot like my girl Tessa was. They were both very young moms, too (Tessa and Paige) and both PEWs.

I learn something new practically every day on this forum, so cool!
