Rupert my hairless has been battling an URI since we got him. He is about 5 months and does a lot of sneezing, hiccuping, and in the past couple of days I've heard major congestion in his nose when listening to his breathing. The vet started him on doxy about two weeks ago but thats done nothing so now I got baytril today. He gave me enough for 20days and said to give him .05cc/ml twice a day but I don't know if that dosage is correct and I cannot figure out how to convert cc or ml from mg which is listed on the Rat Med Guide...

enrofloxacin (Baytril) 15 mg/kg BID, PO (oral) for 10-30 days
doxycycline 5 mg/kg BID PO (oral) for 10-30 days

He weighs 407grams. To me .05cc/ml seems too small and he only gave me 1ml worth of it. I think he made a mistake and meant to put .5cc/ml but if so I don't have enough for 20days!

Also, when combining with doxy do I give them at the same time, can they be mixed together? And just to be safe he is getting 3/10cc.
This is for doxy from the Rat Med Guide
5 mg/kg , PO , q12hrs, 14 to 30 days
I can't start medicating until I know I'm giving him the right amount can someone please help me? Thanks

In order to double check the dosage, we will need to know the strength of the medication. (mg/ml)
If that info is not on the bottle (and it should be) then you will need to contact the vet and ask.

btw, if the baytril does help, he will likely need to be on it for about 6 weeks.

Yea I'm pretty sure that's what it says. he hand wrote it out b/c it was a last minute phone request by me to come pick up but that's what it says.

The Rat Medication guide says this about 10% baytril...

*Note: If choosing to use Baytril 10%, keep in mind it has a concentration of 100 mg per 1 mL. Also, because the 10% concentration can be so caustic to tissue it must be diluted for all routes.

That makes me nervous...

If the baytril is 100mg/ml, then 0.1 ml = 10 mg of baytril

The dose of 15 mg/kg would be 0.06 ml of baytril twice a day for your boy as he weighs 0.407 kg

I use the Rat Health Care book which states a higher dose for baytril of 10 mg/454.4 g (10 mg/Ib) which would be 0.09 ml of baytril twice a day

Is the baytril oral or injectable (both are given orally to rats).
We give the injectable baytril orally and it tastes awful so you need to add things to it to make it taste better once the amount has been measured out.
(After it has been measured out, I mix it with a drop of strawberry quic, baby cereal, a drop of olive oil and a few drops of water.)

I think its the injectible kind, its clear and came in a syringe with blunt needle, but not for injecting but that makes me think its not the oral kind. Is such a high concentration safe? Also do you think the doxy dosage is correct and can I mix the doxy and baytril together? Thanks for your help!

Do you know the concentration for the doxy mg/ml ?

It is better to give meds half an hour to an hour apart but most of us do not have that option.

I mix all the meds a rat is getting into a small dish/finger bowl/etc with a drop of strawberry quic, baby cereal, a drop or two of olive oil, and a few drops of water. Mix it up and give it to the rattie. Other people mix meds up with other things ... it depends on what your rattie likes ...
but no calcium within two hours of meds as it makes many meds less effective.
There is a thread on mixing up meds where people have shared their ideas.

The Rat Health Care book gives the dose for doxy as 2.5 to 5 mg/454.4g or 2.5 to 5 mg/Ib
The low end of this range is similar to the dose given in the Rat Guide.

If your doxy is 50mg/ml and he weighs 407g

then the dose at 2.5 mg/454.4 g would be 0.05 ml of doxy twice a day

and the dose at 5 mg/454.4 g would be 0.09 ml of doxy twice a day

did you mean 5/10ml of doxy not 5/100? Cause the concentration is much less than the baytril and he's been taking 3/10 so I could see it going up a little cause he weighed less when it was perscribed last month? Thanks
Oh and I got some bananna and pear baby food today and it worked great, he loved it!

Note: 0.5 ml of doxy with a concentration of 50 mg/ml would be 25 mg. Way too high.
0.3 ml of doxy at a concentration of 50 mg/ml would be 15 mg which is much too high.
At 407 g, he should be getting between 2.2 mg and 4.5 mg of doxy twice a day.

(The Rat Guide says 2.5 mg/Ib (ie. 2.5mg/454.4 g) too)

The doxy is 50mg/ml and I usually mimx the meds with yogurt but that would be calcium wouldn't it or is that ok? Thanks

ok, 10 mg/ml changes everything.

At 10 mg/ml, he should get between 0.22 ml (2.5 mg/454.4 g) and 0.45 ml (5 mg/454.5 g) of doxy twice a day.
So 0.3 ml of doxy twice a day is fine.
