okay so my two new members koala and ninja are both sisters. Every time I feed them ninja always chases koala around and pins her down and nips her and koala screams bloody murder. They continue after i tap the cage or open the cage to separate them. Is this normal? they are fine otherwise it is only when i am feeding them. also when i have all three girls out Pandora my older female about 1 1/2 and the other two girls they are fine and then panda will chases one of then and pins them down and it looks like she is going to bite them this is very loud and disturbing for me i always immediately separate them before Pandora can nip. Is there anything I can do? I have them on a neutral ground with no food. please help as i would like to have everyone get along.

It almost seems to me that they are showing normal behaviour especially if one of the girls is in heat.
How old are the two younger ones? How big is your cage? What you could try doing if one is food aggressive, is take out the aggressor and let the other one eat first for a few minutes before adding the other girl back in. Also, give the food in two separate bowls in two separate area of the cage.

the younger ones are rescues but they are prob. 6-9 months old. There cage is a 3 level cage from a pet store. The bars are 1/2 inch apart because they are still small and can fit through 1 inch bars. the length and width is about 4 feet by 2 feet. I will try taking ninja out and letting koala eat first. What about when i let them out for play time? Is this normal behavior my older female Pandora is displaying. I'm scared she might bite them or injure them. please advise.

If this is during intro Pandora is showing them she's the boss. I wouldn't separate them right away. The younger ones have to submit to her.

mamarat- i did what you said and hey were good and the two younger ones learned quick. Pandora pinned them down a few times and they screamed but they were fine then the submitted to her. Koala one of my younger girls was wagging her tail, the the tip of it any idea what this means? The ending of the intors was good Pandora then cleaned both little ones and no more screaming. Thanks for your help, it sounded worse then it really was and i was nervous that they might hurt each other.

Intros are always scary. The tail wagging, some rats do that when they are scared, stressed or even excited. In this case I don't think it's a bad thing.

Do you have any more info on how I can judge whether the fighting is serious? curly and tuppence are 'fighting', well, crazy curly is always attacking tuppy, and just being very dominant over her. I can't work out if it's anything to worry about or not. What should I be looking out for?

Look at the other rats around. If they go on alert when this happens, then it's more serious than not. If they run and hide, then it's very serious. If they just keep going and doing what they are doing, then it's not serious.

Tuppy looked alert today and then ran away :-( what's action shall I take first? shall I put Curly in a small cage for a bit when she does it?
