Hi, does anyone know how long I should keep giving ibuprofen to my pet rat to treat his swelled foot?
I think he injured his leg and it became very swollen, 2 times bigger than his other leg :sad3: so I started giving him ibuprofen (Advil for infants, ibuprofen 200mg/5ml drops) 0.25 ml 2 times a day to treat the pain and swelling. I gave it to him 2 times and his leg is better now, the swelling is almost gone but he is still not using his leg and it is still bigger than the other one. So should I stop or continue giving it to him? How long can I keep giving him ibuprofen? I’m afraid that if I give it to him for too long I’m gonna poison him but on the other hand I’m afraid that if I stop giving it to him the swelling might come back. Thanks in advance for all your answers. I’m very worried about him :sad3: .

I would give it to him another day, and see how he is tomorrow night. Is he dotting the foot down a little for balance? Sounds like a sprain, and he is a smart boy and not using the injured foot to let it heal. Ibuprofen is normally given every 4-6 hours so twice a day should be very safe for him.

Sprain and swelling is quite common in our little guys. He should recover fully. If you see it's getting worse or discoloured, then it might be wise to see a vet in case it's cellulitis.
