Rosie has been very snuffly over the last 6 months. I cannot get abs into her. My vet Dr. Randall has always had a script on standby for me for a course of cortisone injections (twice daily for the first three days, then once a day for four days) to reduce inflamation and help her breathing and I've been seeing him regularly to assess her breathing.
On Thursday night I got home and she was labouring for breath, she was fine the day before. I called the emergency vet on duty, Dr Semi and she met me at the clinic so I could pick up the injections and start the course that night. I gave Rose steam therapy four times that evening (put the humidifier in the bathroom and steamed the whole room up for the evening). She seemed to improve immediately. On Friday she was better again and I went to see Randall that afternoon just so he could check on her. This morning (Saturday) I got up and she has a large lump under her left arm and what feels like a thicking or beginning of a lump under her right. We went back see Randall again this morning and he said it definately was not there yesterday afternoon. So it's likely the steriods are having an effect on her. He took an aspiration of the lump and it's not an abcess. There's no blood and there were only a few lymph cells which he said in cats and dogs indicates it's not a 'scientific term' tumor. (I can't remember the name). He's not sure exactly what it could be. He said we could take a biopsy or he could send the slide results taken today and see what comes up.

Rosie is a Russian Blue berkshire and has just turned 2 years old. She's never had any other problems except for her breathing issues.

I can stop the cort injections but then she won't be able to breath again or I can keep going and keep a close eye on the lump/s. I'd like to know:
1) Is this common?
2) Are the lumps likely to be painful?
3) Could they go down once we stop the cort?

Any help would be much appreciated. I don't want to draw this out for Rosie if it's all just downhill from here....and they go down so fast you know :cry4:

It is probably just a mammary tumor. Depending on how fast they grow will. You can cut out all sugars and junky treats if she gets them it will help slow down the process. Most rats can live a while with a tumor but it isnt fun to watch. Cant say for sure that the shots had much to do with it with rats are on shots with no tumors it is probably just something that was gonna come up. I guess if she cannot have surgery then you can watch and see if it goes down. We have had some lumps that show up and go back down after some time.

:thud: Just a mammory tumor! Oh No!

Randall said the cortisone could have just been the release brake for whatever was going on and so that's why it's just happened now and so quickly.....

He also seems to think it's the lymph nodes because it's under the arms. He checked all other lymph nodes and there were no unusal changes ie throat, groin & at the back of the leg. It's too much of a coincidence for it to be on both under arms (one a full lump and the other starting to swell)...

At this point if they are mam tumors they are not painful. As they grow they hinder the rats movements. sorry I can't offer more advice.

There is also the possibility of it only being fat deposits, which would pop up on both sides in the exact spots. If that's the case, it totally doesn't hurt or shouldn't grow much bigger.

Mammary tumours are usually not painful until they get very very big. I've seen some rats live an extra 7 months with them. And many pass away from something other than the size of tumour.
Lots and lots of cuddle for your sweetie.

Rosie is doing ok today. The lump has not increased in size thank goodness. I went back to the vet again anyway and mentioned about the mammory tumor. He said it wasn't a mammory tumor because it's not in the right place. This pics I posted here may not show it too well, I was kind of pulling it out for you to see better but it really is in the skin under her arm. She's still feeling off and her breathing gets good and bad throughout the day. Poor baby.

Does your vet treat rats? I've had quite a few mammary tumors in that spot on my rats. Good luck with your sweetie. They can have mammary tumors all over their bodies.

I too think it could be a mammary tumor. That's the same spot that my Willow got one so it is possible for a mammary to grow there. It's possible anywhere in the mammary gland, which is ALOT of the rats body.

Hmmmm...ok that is really interesting. The vet seemed certain that it wasn't mammary but he is not all that experienced with rats. Do they really have that large a mammary area?

This is the diagram I could find online. But it is a VERY big portion of their body. (all the dotted area is the mammary gland)
