This is Hector. My grandmother got him for me as a gift, knowing I have wanted a rat all my life. My mom never would let me own one, so I always had guinea pigs, but now that I am living with my dad, I am able to finally have rats : )
I was going to go to the nearest breeder to pick up my rats, in a pair, but my grandmother came to me one day with Hector. He's from Petco, and so far he isn't 100% trust trained. I spend as much time I can with him daily.
He's still skittish and doesn't like it too much when I pet him or pick him up, so I have been allowing him to come to me instead. I feed him treats when he's good : ) He takes treats gently from my fingers, but if I go to pet him he becomes panicky and wants to bite (in fear, not aggression).
I built a playpen for him with my dad, so he can run about half of my bedroom with out getting hurt or escaping. I am happy to find this forum. Maybe some of you more experienced rat owners can help me with my trust training.
I also know rats with red tinted eyes do not see as well as rats with black eyes, so maybe that's something else that links to his skittishness.
I do hope to make friends here, and I am hoping to get Hector a rattie friend very soon. Any advice I'd be glad to hear. Thank you!
