I recently took one of my guys to my vet as his head was starting to turn, my vet gave me antibotics for his ear. I used them up and he was fine now 4 weeks later his head is turning again . Is this a reacurring problem with rats my other guy is fine. I clean the cage every 3 days. Thanks

It sounds like an ear infection. I would ask your vet for a steroid injection for anti inflammatory, and then put him onto a course of prednisalone (steroid) tablets and baytril (an antibiotic to treat the infection). I would go to the emergancy vet, they can go downhill very fast.

Ear infections are so hard to get rid of. He might need a longer course of antibiotics and perhaps like Rachael has suggested a steroid as well.

As Jo said they are hard to get rid of, and sometimes they will be left with the head tilt once the infection has cleared up.

I have a couple "perma-tilts" here. The tilt itself may never go away, but the suggestions others have given you are great.

How long was he on antibiotics for?

Yeah like the others said head tilt may stay with them after but if it came back the way you say it may the ear infection came back also so id go back to vet and make sure all is well.

I have two head tilt girls here they got their meds and such but the tilt stayed with them for life now.

He was on them for a week, Ill take him back just to make sure hes eating and playing like nothing is wrong its not a big tilt I notice it more when hes looking for treats. Thanks for the info Ill phone the vet now.

He needs to be on abs for at least 14 days or longer maybe 3 weeks. A week is not long enough to get rid of anything. He also needs a steroid as well with the ab.

With everything we've gone through my vet realizes that a rat needs to be on meds way longer than a week, she always does minimum a month.
