I never got what people were talking about when they said Nakkies (SkinKids as I call them) are prone to eye and skin problems.
My boys never had any of that, until now.

It seems Davey has begun his spiral...and I'm not in the least happy about it. He's going to the vet on Friday but until then does anyone know what I can do for him.
His blind eye (the one with the catarct) has started to weep pus. It's not dripping just weeping ever so slightly.
I took some pics of him just now, I was trying to show that his blind eye is sunken compared to the other and it's always squinty.

His Blind eye

See the difference??

Then he got fed up...:gaah: Rats, can't live with 'em can't live w/o 'em

So far I have just been wiping the eye with a Q-tip every few hours, but that's it. I don't have any drugs to give him, the only baytril in the house is currently being used for Alvin (URI). Should I buy some eye ointment for him? Does anyone know what this could be?
Also his normal eye seems a lot more porphy as of late (I think it's due to whatever is up with his other eye), I feel so bad for Davey...he's not even two yet and all these issues.

don't know if it would work with a rat but when my grand son had a bad eye infection, when he was new born we used to clean it with a make up pad you know those round things to take make up off with well we would dip that in a cooled down boiled salted water. then wipe his eye clean. I don,t know if it's good for rats but if it's good enough for a new born of 5 lbs...

You could try some simple tired/sore/red eye drops. But with no eyelashes he's open to all kinds of irritants, so if that isn't enough try Polysporin eye/ear drops. That little minor help might be all he needs, I hope it's that simple.

Hmmm....Dee, look at that eye again, but to me it looks very familiar. I think your boy actually has swollen lids and his eye isn't sunken. It looks like his 3rd eyelid is up like Lilith's was. He probably has an irritant. I would try for natural tears instead of drops with meds. See if it's able to help at all. He may need to be gassed down, and his eye looked at. And if he's anything like Lilith there's something under there rubbing under his eye.

Could also try Fuciderm if you have any readily available. I have it all the time here because of those nakkies and their eyes.

Thats what I was thinking too Shelagh! When they get puffy like that they generally have something in there. You may actually be able to look yourself, I could with Rhys and he normally had poop in there (eww, I know)...but if he is like Lilith you'll need a vets assistance.

I ws just wondering though with the infection smell surrounding that eye, it may be something more. I did see anything stuck under his third eyelid, but the vet may see more. I'll update when I find out.

The other think I was thinking is that if there is something wrong with the eye (more so then blindness) I have heard that sometimes they shrivel up and I guess die off. I am not really sure how it works but the lids heal over and then he will be left with one eye...that's what I heard, not sure if its really possible or if its the case with your boy...

the ulceration can turn to infection. How long has his eye looked like that?

His eye olny started to smell maybe three weeks ago. But I only noticed it weeping this week.
I had thought the smell was from his ear or teeth etc, but then his eye started. I bought him drops so I'm going to use those until we got o the vet tomorrow.

There's probably something stuck in there. Harry used to get things caught in his so easy. There was a month when I was at the vet 8 times to get something out of it.

Aww man that sucks, sausage...Darn nakkie eyes! I've only had one hairless before and he had terrible eyes. If he wasn't getting bits of fleece stuck in his eyes, he was getting the dust from the blocks in them. I was constantly putting drops of some kind in his eyes. I remember using the natural tears and poly, but I got one from the vet when he was having a similar problem that Davey is having. I don't remember what it was called but I remember that it was an "anti-inflammitory, anti-bacterial" drop. It worked really well, the swelling went down and his eyes cleared right up. I don't know if it would help or not in this situation, especially since I can't remember what it was called lol.

Good luck!

His eyes are pussing up again, but now there's a new "buddy" that maybe contributing to the problem.
He seems to have a lump growing just below his ear. I noticed this on Wednesday and figured I'd see how fast it was growing (it was already 1cm when I found it). Today I came home from schoolto discover his eye all gooey :sick2:
I cleaned it up and put some drops in it and more BNP. This is his eye with a catact, so just for completeness sake I cleaned his ear (on this side too) and found some wax/pus(not sure which) in there too.

I really rather he didn't get surgery for this as he's over two now and surgeries on any men over two makes me SUPER nervous. I also don’t want to put him on a course of antibiotics to stress him out daily for the rest of his life which is something I did with Eli and Nanuk, and I don’t think it was the right thing to do to them. I'm planning on watching him closely over the weekend and taking a course of action from there.

In the meanwhile I’m wondering if anyone has dealt with this before, what was causing it and if you treated it what the outcome was?

I'm not sure. I'm treating him with his BNP again and it seems to be working. And the lump "seems" to be diminishing.
This is a weird one. I'm going to keep treating his eye and see how it looks in a few days and I'm going to keep checking the lump.
